NTIA Says Government Drugs Policy in the UK is Dangerously Outdated Following the release of the report released by the Home Affairs Select Committee on Drugs and committee recommendations. Michael Kill, CEO of Night Time Industries Association, Calls for Urgent Modernisation of UK Government's Drug Policy Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) supports the recommendations within the Home Affairs Select Committee report released today, and has issued a strong call for the UK Government to address the dangerously outdated nature of the country's drug policy. The Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, which forms the cornerstone of drug regulations in the UK, is now over 50 years old and ill-suited to the contemporary challenges posed by drug misuse and harm reduction. While the UK has long been a pioneer in the global music and entertainment scene, our approach to drug policy has lagged behind the progressive measures embraced by our European counterparts. Across the channel, countries have taken significant steps forward by integrating drug checking initiatives into festivals and cultural events. These programs, aimed at ensuring the safety of festivalgoers and reducing drug-related harm, have proven to be effective tools in minimising risks associated with substance misuse. Kill emphasises that the time has come for the UK to embrace a comprehensive reform of its drug policy. He states, "The Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 has served its purpose, but the landscape has evolved dramatically since its enactment. Our European neighbours have taken proactive measures to address drug-related challenges, prioritising harm reduction and public safety. It is high time for the UK to catch up and adopt a more pragmatic and modern approach." Read More https://lnkd.in/ezFvVmyv Link to Home Affairs Select Committee Report https://lnkd.in/evKV39SP

What a Start to the Day! We're thrilled to share that our Listen for Life Campaign has been honored with the International Golden Moon Award for its groundbreaking work in hearing conservation! This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team, including @RobertShepherd, @KeithReilly, @BiffMitchell, to our partners @Specsavers and the NTIA family. Huge congrats to everyone involved! 2025 is set to be a landmark year as we officially launch Listen for Life at our upcoming conference! Today’s agenda is packed: kicking off with the first draft of our Quarterly NTE Market Tracker in partnership with CGA Nielsen. Then it’s straight into a meeting with MHCLG to explore Agent of Change and planning reform, ensuring we’re fighting for policies that protect and support our nighttime industries. This afternoon, we'll dive into exciting projects—a potential documentary highlighting the cultural value of clubs, a talk on UK nightlife at BEYOND Belgrade as a guest of the British Council, and a catch-up with SXSW London. We’re also connecting with Unight in Ukraine, celebrating their inspiring work in incredibly tough circumstances. Looking forward to hopefully welcoming Andrii at the February Summit! Wrapping up with a spot on Deutschland Radio, and a meeting with Jackie from Soho Business Alliance—a true champion for NTE in Soho! Finally, closing the day with the International Nightlife Association to discuss next year’s summit and standing in solidarity with our friends in Spain. So much to look forward to and build upon! Stay tuned, and thank you all for your continued support in driving the future of the night-time economy! #NTIA #ListenForLife #NightTimeEconomy #HearTheFuture

Bank of England Cuts Rates, but Economic Concerns Remain Yesterday, the Bank of England announced a cut to its base interest rate by 0.25 percentage points, dropping it to 4.75%—marking the second rate cut this year. While this may be a win for Chancellor Rachel Reeves, who’s seeking economic stimulus, the bank also warned that inflation may remain above the 2% target longer than anticipated. The blame? Increased domestic spending pressures, the Bank says. The nightlife industry is especially tuned in. Interest rate cuts can boost spending, which is good for bars, clubs, and entertainment venues, but persistent inflation can keep costs high for businesses and patrons alike. It’s a double-edged sword: more disposable income on one hand, but pressures on operating costs on the other. Additionally, Governor Andrew Bailey refused to speculate on the impact of U.S. President-Elect Donald Trump’s proposed trade tariffs, leaving businesses bracing for potential shocks from overseas as well. The NTIA will be closely monitoring the effects of these policies on the nighttime economy, and we encourage our community to do the same. The cost of living, inflation, and interest rates all impact our patrons and their ability to spend time and money in our venues. Stay tuned as we advocate for our industry’s needs in this turbulent financial climate. #NTIA #BankOfEngland #NightTimeEconomy #InterestRates #Inflation

Big day ahead! This morning, the Bank of England will announce its decision – will they drop interest rates following September’s inflation drop to 1.7%? It’s a key moment for our sector, and we’ll be closely monitoring the impact. Quick meeting at 9am in Euston then off to the Undercroft in Mayfair – the restaurant is shaping up nicely! I’ll be meeting with Jake Reed, our new Head of PA, to discuss our Political Strategy for 2025. Then, it’s on to our Regional Ambassadors Meeting to update on the Budget and the upcoming Birmingham Summit 2025. After that, I’ll meet with the Welsh Commission to address challenges in the sector and provide an update on our Welsh Manifesto. Next, I’ll have a series of meetings with Alightmedia, the International Nightlife Association, and the Institute of Hospitality. The evening will bring a licensing hearing for Bidborough Works, followed by a night walk with Matthew Sims from HOLBA. Before diving into all of this, our thoughts are with the families and people affected by the tragic events in Valencia following the cancellation of the International Congress. Our hearts go out to everyone suffering across Spain. It’s going to be a long day, but that’s what it takes – I’ll be out there, seeing the night firsthand to represent it right! #NightlifeMatters #NTIA #PoliticalStrategy #NightTimeEconomy #OnTheGround #Valencia #Spain

Urgent Need to Protect the UK’s Night-Time Economy! The situation is critical: the number of nightclubs has plummeted by over 37% since March 2020, with 461 venues closing permanently. Without meaningful support from the Government, this vital cultural sector will disappear entirely. Take action now. It takes less the 60 seconds. https://buff.ly/40cnK9M SaveOurNightlife #CulturalHeritage #LastNightOut #NightclubCulture

#TheLastNightOut is approaching... This campaign isn't just about the decline of nightclubs. It's a wake-up call for a looming tragedy we can still prevent. Every day, we edge closer to losing a vital piece of our cultural fabric—and it’s not just businesses at stake, but communities, jobs, and wellbeing. Nightclubs shape local identity, provide livelihoods, and foster physical, social, and mental health for millions. These spaces help other businesses thrive too, creating a powerful ripple effect across the economy. They’re fragile, and without support, we risk losing them forever.Don't underestimate their value! Let’s stand together to protect this essential part of our society. #TheLastNightOut must not be the last. Support your night-time economy, before it’s too late!
