We are delighted that Northern Lithium’s progress and plans were featured in today’s Sunday Times https://lnkd.in/eVEqB82j. Having delivered exceptional results from our recent in-field long-term pump testing programme we have achieved an important step in proving the commercial viability of our lithium brines development project in the Northeast of England. With over 100 GWh of EV batteries requirement from 2030, and the need for nearly 200 GWh of energy storage by 2050, UK lithium demand is forecast to grow to 80,000 tpa by 2030 and 135,000 tpa by 2040 with no current domestic lithium supply. Our successful results have enabled the launch and acceleration of key next milestones towards commercial production in 2027, including further pump tests at significantly higher flow rates and the installation of an in-field Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) demonstration plant in 2024 and the drilling of further production capable and feasibility boreholes in 2025. This will look at the importance of sustainable mining to the net-zero transition, and the growing need for critical minerals in order to move away from fossil fuels. Dr Eva Marquis is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the UKRI Interdisciplinary Circular Economy Centre for Technology Metals (Met4Tech), focussing on developing circular economy geomodels for technology metals.
