When people move between academia, business and government, it can lead to rewarding careers and world-changing ideas. So how do we empower people to take a less linear path? We teamed up with Prosper , who've developed a career development model that helps postdocs understand their potential career paths and develop the skills to move between sectors. Over the last year, we've supported them to work with over 100 employers and 50 HEIs to build resources and embed their model into institutions. Last year, we invested the highest-ever proportion of our research funding into projects outside London and the south-east. The detail is set out in the lastest edition of our annual report tracking our investment in the UK's regions and devolved nations. Investing in a geographically broad portfolio of projects can help us to build on regional strengths and boost opportunities and living standards across the country. Significant investments in the devolved nations and English regions in 2023-24 include our Local Policy Innovation Partnerships and three major innovation accelerators in Glasgow, Manchester and the West Midlands. We also invested in clusters of expertise that build on regional strengths and attract private investment, such as: ▶️ advanced manufacturing in Northern Ireland ▶️ semi-conductors and media in Wales ▶️ advanced ceramics in Staffordshire Head to the UKRI news webpage to read the report.

Have your say on the UK's priorities for international nature and environment research https://lnkd.in/epBteYyR The #UK government has commissioned a survey on its international priorities for research on nature and the environment in #ODA (Official Development Assistance) settings. The survey will help to shape the current and future funding strategy for international research, including the targeting of specific research funding opportunities. Input is welcomed from people with diverse backgrounds, training, professional and community roles at different levels. The survey should take about 20 - 30 minutes to complete, and can be viewed in English, Spanish, Portuguese or French. It is open until 4 April 2025. #sustainability #nature #ODA #ecology #conservation

Yesterday Science and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle announced two UKRI investments into advanced technology as part of a speech at the Tech Policy Conference. The funding will support development of next-generation connectivity, quantum computing, and quantum network technologies, removing barriers to their commercialisation and ensuring the UK can exploit their benefits sooner. The investments are: ▶️ Future Communications Hubs. Researchers developing connectivity technologies capable of the enormous speed, capacity and security needed to make the most of new technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), will receive a share of at least £15 million from Innovate UK and EPSRC. The funding will support the three future communications research hubs to continue their work, as well as a UK-wide experimentation platform for future telecoms research. ▶️ Quantum Missions pilot competition. Innovate UK is investing over £12 million in 10 projects to accelerate quantum computing (QC) and quantum network (QN) technologies. The resulting benefits could see breakthroughs in drug discovery, financial portfolio optimisation and the empowering of AI. It aligns with the UK’s aims to deploy the world’s most advances quantum network at scale by 2035. Head to the UKRI website to find out more. Department for Science, Innovation and Technology

We're pleased that a UKRI-funded project using AI to help dairy farmers fight heat stress in their cows has featured on The Naked Scientists podcast. Climate change is putting pressure on welfare and milk yields in the UK's dairy herds, but keeping buildings at a suitable temperature for every cow is a difficult feat. Galebreaker Agri is developing an AI-powered system that adjusts ventilation around each individual cow depending on her temperature and behaviour, effectively putting her in control of her own cooling system.
