  • 🎯 Advocating for Physical Activity in Parliament MPs Stuart Andrew, Max Wilkinson, and Josh Babarinde raised important challenges and opportunities for the sector in the Department of Culture Media and Sport’s Oral Questions last Thursday. We’re pleased to have briefed them ahead of the session using ukactive members’ views, including the impact of the rise in National Insurance Contributions on their businesses. 💡 Highlights from the debate: 👉 Stuart Andrew MP (Con, Daventry, Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport) raised questions on the National Physical Activity Taskforce, the impact of National Insurance costs on the sector, and how the Government plans to ensure school facilities stay open outside the school day. 👉 Max Wilkinson MP (Lib Dem, Cheltenham, Spokesperson for Culture, Media and Sport) highlighted the role of physical activity in improving public health, referencing inactivity statistics and asking what steps are being taken across Government to prioritise this agenda. 👉 Josh Babarinde MP (Lib Dem, Eastbourne) asked about the inclusion of swimming pools in the National Youth Strategy and called for a meeting with Ministers to discuss this further. We remain committed to working with policymakers to ensure the sector's voice is heard and to champion policies that promote a healthier, more active nation. #PhysicalActivity #ukactive

  • A new study published in the BMJ this week showed that exercising for at least a week before surgery could halve the risk of complications experienced by patients. The research on more than 15,000 people undergoing operations suggests that boosting activity levels and eating healthily in the run-up to surgery could have a powerful effect. Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, our CEO, Huw Edwards, said: "Prehabilitation programmes in gyms and leisure centres are helping people across the nation to improve their fitness for treatment and their mental state, which cannot be underestimated. “If the Government invests in growing these programmes, we can reduce NHS waiting lists, free up beds and help people return to healthy, pain-free lives, which would be a win for the economy too.” Read the full story below: https://lnkd.in/dUVHRCbm
