wasp.milky.treat - that's where I'll find myself for a couple of days next week! I'll be attending the two-day introduction to battery manufacturing course at The UKBIC which is open to technicians, managers, researchers, investors, or anyone interested in gaining practical knowledge of the growing battery sector.   'Delegates will be able to listen to specialists introduce the fundamentals of the battery manufacturing process, hear about the materials required, and the technologies available. They will also be given the chance to tour the state-of-the-art facility and see the giga scale battery manufacturing equipment used in the facility' UKBIC is a key part of the Faraday Battery Challenge (FBC), a Government programme to fast track the development of cost-effective, high-performance, durable, safe, low-weight and recyclable batteries. In addition to funding from the Faraday Battery Challenge, part of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, at UK Research and Innovation, UKBIC is also part-funded through the West Midlands Combined Authority. The project has been delivered through a consortium of Coventry City Council, Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership and WMG, University of Warwick. UKBIC was created in 2018 following a competition led by the Advanced Propulsion Centre UK with support from Innovate UK. It was a great pleasure to welcome Sir Stan Whittingham, Chemistry Nobel Laureate and Professor and Distinguished Director of NECCES and Battery-NY at Binghamton University (SUNY) to the UKBIC stand during day one of The Battery Show North America. One of the topics he discussed during his visit to the stand was market uncertainty. He commented on the importance and need to continue at pace for battery technology innovation. Even in a slow market, the pursuit of better, more efficient batteries is crucial for advancing and driving technological progress for a better more sustainable future. For more than three decades, Sir Stan - who visited UKBIC last year - has been a pioneer in the development of lithium-ion batteries, for which he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2019. He holds the original patent on the use of intercalation chemistry in high-power density, highly reversible lithium batteries. Great #battery training led by Jonty Deeley-Williamson at the excellent UKBIC facilities ... No one said making #batteries is easy, and changing battery lines, at scale, to cater for various cell chemistries sounds like insanity in today's climate ... The cleaning downtime alone is a financial nightmare for any large scale battery facility ... and I am picking this up from a two day training course ... Scaling is the biggest challenge for the sector, and standardisation seems to be the best strategy - that and partnerships Looking forward to seeing UKBIC CTO Richard L. later ... it was his #batteries that were pushing the envelope at Britishvolt back in the day ...
