Caution: Read only if laughing out loud right now won’t land you in trouble.🤭 Today U&Dave, our BAFTA-winning entertainment channel, has announced the winner of ‘U&Dave’s Funniest Joke of the Fringe’ Award 2024. Now in its fifteenth year, the Joke of the Fringe Award celebrates the art of joke writing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and this year has been won by comedian Mark Simmons with: 'I was going to sail around the globe in the world’s smallest ship but I bottled it’, taken from his PHB’s Free Fringe show at Liquid Room Annexe. Recognising comics both established and up-and-coming, other jokes in the Top 15 include one-liners from the likes of Olaf Falafel, Arthur Smith and Chelsea Birkby, with themes such as AI, British etiquette and the Olympics featuring in the winning list. A shortlist was chosen by a panel of UK comedy critics who attended hundreds of shows across the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. This shortlist was submitted anonymously - without the name of the comic involved - to a public vote, after which U&Dave’s Funniest Jokes of the Fringe Festival 2024 were revealed, topped by Mark's nautical one-liner, and Alec Snook and Alex Kitson in second and third place. 🥇 I was going to sail around the globe in the world’s smallest ship but I bottled it. - Mark Simmons 🥈 I've been taking salsa lessons for months, but I just don't feel like I'm progressing.
