“The budget is an opportunity for the UK Government to put children first and reverse years of austerity.” UNICEF UK CEO, Dr. Philip Goodwin, urges the UK Government to prioritise children in the upcoming budget. This is a pivotal moment to set the stage for a brighter future for the next generation. Here in the UK, parents are struggling to afford essentials needed for their children's happiness and health. Globally, UNICEF reports that 1 in 4 children under 5 face severe food poverty, further exacerbated by ongoing conflicts. Children deserve better. Tobacco use is a leading cause of non-communicable diseases (#NCDs) like lung cancer and respiratory illnesses. In Indonesia, AstraZeneca’s Young Health Programme and UNICEF have partnered to tackle this issue through youth-led advocacy. In 2021, tobacco use was a major issue for Indonesian young people with 18.8% of 13–15-year-olds identifying as smokers, with the rate for boys reaching 35.5%. Even non-smokers were at risk, with 56% exposed to second-hand smoke at school. Through the support of our partnership, UNICEF Indonesia worked with young people to shape tobacco control effort and empowered them to engage in advocacy, awareness campaigns, and policy discussions. These efforts contributed to new regulations, such as Law No.17/2023, which imposed stricter tobacco sale restrictions, and PP No.28/2024, banning tobacco sales to those under 21 and pregnant women. Youth advocates were key in establishing smoke-free zones in 479 of Indonesia’s 514 cities, significantly reducing second-hand smoke exposure and discouraging adolescent smoking. Their advocacy helped lower smoking rates among 10–18-year-olds to 7.4% in 2024, surpassing the national target of 8.7%. Thank you to our partner, AstraZeneca’s Young Health Programme, for your ongoing commitment to positive health outcomes.   Find out more about our partnership here: https://lnkd.in/ecAuMEgg    #ForEveryChild

As UNICEF teams continue to respond to emergencies in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, UNICEF UK is looking for corporates to join our Emergency Alliance in pledging much needed support for children. An escalation in conflict across countries in #MENA is having a devastating impact on the lives of children. From Gaza to Sudan and Lebanon, children are being killed, injured, and forced to leave their homes, living in a state of fear and uncertainty, and without access to the basic essentials.   UNICEF continues to respond, working with partners to provide essential services and supplies to support and protect children in the region. In the MENA region, through emergency funding, UNICEF teams are:  - Providing ongoing humanitarian aid in Gaza, from support for displaced families in settlements and shelters, to providing fuel to power sanitation facilities, and delivering medical and nutrition supplies. Our work has also included the delivery of 1.6 million polio vaccines, successfully vaccinating more than 46,000 children since 9th September.   -Providing children in Sudan with screening for malnutrition, critical health supplies, and psychosocial counselling.   -Working with the Ministry of Education and our partners in Lebanon to develop educational options for schools that are being used as shelters for displaced people.  -Ensuring that 6 million women and children in Yemen have access to gender-based violence support.  -Working to protect Syrian children in refugee camps, ensuring children have life-saving supplies including medicine, healthcare, and therapeutic food. We’re also providing education, psychosocial support, and safe spaces for them to play and have some much-needed fun. The Emergency Alliance is critical in boosting UNICEF’s unique ability to scale up global crisis responses rapidly. Partners who join UNICEF UK’s Emergency Alliance help us to respond to emergencies like these immediately, whilst lending their brand’s voices to our advocacy efforts to raise awareness of humanitarian crises. Earlier today, the UNICEF UK corporate partnership network convened for a briefing on the Sudan emergency, led by UNICEF’s Yosef Elgadal and hosted by Emergency Alliance founding member Clyde & Co. The event was an important opportunity to shine a spotlight on the crisis facing Sudan’s 24-million children, and the work that UNICEF is doing to provide families with critical, life-saving assistance. Thank you to everyone who attended this event. If you would like to find out more about how your organisation can support UNICEF’s work for the children of Sudan, please contact corporate@unicef.org.uk or make a donation here: https://lnkd.in/epDmWUky
