Attended the FinTech Talent showcase, my favourite event of the year last Thursday! How time has flown by! For the third time, FinTech students across several master programmes of UWE and UoB presented their dissertations to a mixed audience of industry experts, academics, students and alumni! A big thank you to Stuart Harrison of FinTech West and John Cartlidge of University of Bristol for co-organising with H Ihshaish and I of University of the West of England and to Gavin Phillips of RSM for hosting! Also grateful towards my colleague, Sabri Mohammad, PhD for recommending the first student presenter from MSc Insurance and Risk Management to the showcase, and Oliver Lane for sharing his experience working with universities and students. The stars of the showcase were five student presenters. I learned a great deal from them in less than 2 hours – from getting APIs from Nigerian government and creating an insurance platform to fill gaps in the motor insurance market, to using Natural Language Processing to sift through thousands of news items every day and identifying competitive advantages in real-time, enabling impact investing through the platform connecting Zimbabwean farmers to investors and market, FinTech’s role in creating a more inclusive and stable economy, and the differences in the attitudes towards and the rules & regulations of data privacy and security in the UK and Kenya. Last year was my first time attending the Fintech Awards South West with no expectations aside from connecting and listening to what’s happening outside of Bristol in the South West. To my surprise, there were a lot of industry experts from consulting to payments to wealth management to other such financial and fintech industries. Loved the energy and support they had for each award announced! So, I’ll definitely be there again this year, but will you?
