Fast Lap Friday! This week comes from Paul Ricard in the Comte Racing Team run Peugeot 208 from last weekend in the FFSA TC France Championship. Only this lap was never driven. This lap is a composite of Nicolas Roumezy's best sectors stitched together in Circuit Tools as his "Ideal Lap". I've been experimenting with an interesting graphic to show dynamic over/understeer to visualize vehicle balance. The front/rear slip angle is shown in the centre of this video (the heat maps on the right are tyre temperatures). Interestingly you can see how I have to setup and drive this car to make it perform. It has a very large turbo, so you need to be on the throttle early to keep it spinning, so I try to promote some oversteer around the apex point so I can balance the throttle, rather than waiting to get on the throttle due to understeer. Watching the graphic you can almost feel which end of the car is sliding in the corner, and gives you a real sense of the way the car is behaving. Fascinating! (This was during qualifying, and I managed to get pole position, so the balance was pretty good!).
