The Verdantix team want carbon markets to work efficiently and with integrity but having covered developments for 15 years this continues to be a case of misplaced optimism battling painful reality.
Just when the supporters of the #vcm thought that the appalling headlines were a thing of the past yet another reputational explosion goes off. Given this narrative has been largely the same since 2008 I am surprised that so many smart people believe that an unregulated market operating in many economies with weak legal frameworks will somehow achieve “integrity”. After all, heavily regulated US financial markets have their own scandals. Can all bad actors in the #carbonmarkets be squeezed out? No. https://lnkd.in/eWdkdfGG

What a privilege to attend and speak at the Novisto ESG forum in the wonderful city of Montréal. What did I hear? European sustainability leaders at firms covered by the #CSRD are “eating, drinking, living and dreaming about the CSRD”. Everyone is on the same CSRD journey. It is hoovering up budgets and resources. 2025 will be a time to reflect on future strategy. North American sustainability leaders who are not impacted by the CSRD are playing out a kind of ESG hunger games. Dropped into the wilderness they can go in any direction and decide on what impacts, risks and opportunities they want to focus on. De minimis for some, CSRD-aligned for others. Eliminating ESG from discussions is increasingly smart. Thanks to Charles Assaf and Jordan Hamilton for the invitation and excellent fête! #sustainability #netzero #esg

Climate risk management knowledge needs to be cascaded down to smaller, more vulnerable organizations
At the Diligent summit last year I gave a speech drawing on Verdantix climate risk research about two fictional hospitals which were impacted by severe floods. One hospital had a flood risk management plan and the other did not. Fast forward to Hurricane Helene and two real hospitals have been directly impacted by the hurricane. The century-old Tampa General Hospital built a thousand feet long and nine feet high aquafence at a cost of $1 million - unsurprising given its location. By contrast, Unicoi County Hospital had no flood defenses and 54 patients had to be helicoptered to safety after being moved to the roof. Benefits of #climaterisk assessment are very clear. Small hospitals shouldn't be expected to do the work themselves. https://lnkd.in/eUvTxUws

The UN has found that the buildings and construction sector is by far the largest emitter of greenhouse gases, accounting for 37% of global emissions. That makes building decarbonization kind of a big deal. Luckily, the technologies to enable net zero buildings are already available on the market today. But decarbonizing buildings is a complex task requiring a multidimensional strategy. Our latest benchmark looks at how 10 building decarbonization consulting services stack up. If you're involved in net zero strategy, here's what you need to know 👇 🔎 It’s a crowded market. The challenge for buyers is to cut through the noise and identify differentiation between services. 📲 Digital-first service delivery is the name of the game. Expect digital services that improve building management systems, as well as tools to overcome data access barriers. 💸 Cost remains the biggest challenge to building decarbonization. The market is currently prioritizing lower-cost decarbonization interventions rather than the entire building.
