We are teaming up with Henry Royce Institute at The University of Manchester to revolutionise the use of single-use plastics in healthcare. Through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), we will work in collaboration with material experts at Manchester in a 24 month project to investigate how the sustainability of plastics can be improved through the creation of more circular products from waste polypropylene (PP) and polycarbonate (PC). The team will be led by experts including Dr Tom McDonald, Dr Rosa Cuellar-Franca, Professor Michael Shaver, Simon Hogg, and Dr Amir Bolouri, and aims to create new insight into the behaviour of real-world polypropylene and polycarbonate products during mechanical recycling. Alex Hodges, CEO, explains: “Through this project we aim to change how plastics are viewed and used in healthcare. Our work with Manchester will ensure we’re at the forefront in sustainable single use healthcare product research. It will enable us to embed product lifecycle, environment assessment capability and materials research and development into our business culture so that we’re in pole position, able to lead the market in the development and testing of future solutions. It will also help Vernacare economically, by offsetting a portion of our £7m annual polypropylene costs while also broadening their appeal to eco-conscious customers.” Dr Tom McDonald, Reader in Sustainable Materials at The University of Manchester adds, “This project directly connects our prior research on plastics recycling with commercial benefits associated with Vernacare’s mission to protect patient safety while reducing environmental impact. As such, this collaborative project provides the opportunity for direct impact from our research." By working together, we're aiming to lead the way in sustainable healthcare products, ensuring a healthier planet for future generations.

Last week, we supported our distribution partner K2 Medical at the IFHE International Conference 2024 in Cape Town, South Africa. This event focused on our Vortex Air macerator, and the key energy and water savings when using one of our hospital macerators versus a bedpan washer. Alberto Khoury, International Regional Manager, joined Charlene Booysen and her team to support on the stand and hold some great conversations with attendees. #IFHE2024 #InfectionPrevention

This years #IIPW 2024 theme is 'Moving the Needle on Infection Prevention', and specifically, a focus on healthcare worker safety when it comes to sharps injuries. This is an area we're committed to supporting, and within our Clinical Waste Management portfolio, our products are designed with the focus of patient and healthcare professional safety. We've put together a number of training posters for healthcare facilities to display in key usage areas to remind and educate HCPs on best practice when it comes to sharps safety. They can all be accessed and freely downloaded via our website: https://ow.ly/W90q50TOhB8 #IIPW2024 #MovingTheNeedle #ClinicalWasteManagement #SharpsInjuryPrevention

Take a moment to read these stats: In a study in an acute hospital, 98% of wash basins were found to be contaminated. 54% of these were found containing e.coli - a potential cause of meningitis, UTIs, and pneumonia. 23% were found with Staphylococcus aureus - a bacteria that can lead to skin infections, and even sepsis and toxic shock system. Around 300,000 people die every year from acquiring a HCAI in the NHS, with the most common types being pneumonia and UTIs. These can be difficult infections to fight for vulnerable patients, like those in an intensive care unit or high dependency ward. By making a change in the practice of bed bathing, we can help to prevent the risk of potentially contaminated water by removing the need for soap and water. Utilising a rinse free, waterless bathing solution not only helps to prevent healthcare-associated infections, but has also been found to improve patient's skin and the patient/carer experience. We're inviting healthcare facilities to trial our Conti® Waterless Bathing products and see the benefits for themselves.
