VOLTILITY - 2.2GW OF US ENERGY STORAGE CAPACITY CONTRACTED IN Q3 Voltility’s latest energy storage report shows that a total 19 PPAs were signed in Q3 2024 for capacity from either standalone US utility-scale BESS units or those paired with solar. Those agreements account for 2.228GW of storage capacity. The total includes a couple of stand-out corporate PPAs including one with an entertainment powerhouse to power its huge casino-hotels on the Las Vegas strip. VOLTILITY – CLEAN HYDROGEN PLATFORM JUST LAUNCHED Voltility’s new clean hydrogen service will include news bulletins, industry analysis, project alerts & fully searchable project datasets for green hydrogen & blue hydrogen. Green Hydrogen: Green hydrogen projects provide a use case for the wind, solar, and battery storage capacity being developed by many of Voltility’s existing subscribers as it will be required to produce hydrogen at scale in electrolyzers across the US and Canada. Our database maps where green hydrogen projects are being developed and the opportunities for renewable energy developers to supply, or co-develop, the needed green energy. Blue Hydrogen: Blue hydrogen projects – which use natural gas in steam methane reformation or autothermal reforming to produce hydrogen (while capturing the greenhouse gases) – do not require green energy. However, they can serve as a stepping stone to a renewable hydrogen market by, for example, helping create the necessary midstream and storage infrastructure as well as aiding the development of new hydrogen-based industries and offtake opportunities. Project Screening: The North American market has seen a wave of green and blue hydrogen project announcements – a number of which are seeking to benefit from federal government funding or hydrogen production tax credits. However, many projects remain ambiguous and uncertain. As clean hydrogen developers have focused on making their plans a reality, they have sought to sign agreements with hydrogen or ammonia offtakers in order to make projects bankable. Voltility has therefore screened projects to place an emphasis on those that have supply agreements, sales agreements, or some other form of commercial offtake arrangement in place, and those with letters of intent, or memoranda of understanding that are seeking to put such arrangements in place. VOLTILITY – AN OVERSUPPLY OF ENERGY STORAGE ASSETS COOLS Q2 M&A ACTIVITY A growing number of early-stage energy storage assets for sale in ERCOT has prompted investor caution, creating a buyers’ market and falling prices. According to Voltility’s Q2 2024 Energy Storage M&A Report, prices are understood to have dropped dramatically from the USD0.06/w-USD0.12/w range to around USD0.02/w. VOLTILITY ENERGY STORAGE GATHERING 2024: ERCOT PREDICTS 11GW OF ONLINE STORAGE CAPACITY BY YEAR-END BESS capacity on the ERCOT system should more than double during 2024, a senior executive at the Texas grid operator told Voltility’s US Energy Storage annual gathering in Houston April 24th. The event, invitation-only for Voltility subscribers & guests, was attended by 150 leading energy storage developers & investors from across the US. Texas Deployment Surge ERCOT told attendees almost 11.2GW of cumulative battery storage capacity was now expected to online by the end of 2024, compared with the 5.24GW available at the beginning of January. A further surge in deployment over 2025 is then forecast to bring operational storage capacity on the system close to 21GW. VOLTILITY: PIONEERING INSURANCE DEAL OFFERS ENERGY STORAGE DEVELOPERS A REVENUE FLOOR An energy transition software platform has closed a second insurance deal that guarantees a minimum level of revenue for energy storage projects in ERCOT. The risk transfer transaction, structured with a US managing general agent, will provide a revenue ‘floor’ over 5 years for a standalone storage project in Texas. VOLTILITY: NORTHERN CALIFORNIA COUNTY IMPOSES TWO-YEAR BESS MORATORIUM A county in the north of CA has imposed a moratorium of almost 2 years on any further utility-scale lithium-ion BESS projects, citing concerns about public safety. The action, taken in the last week by the county’s Board of Supervisors, represents one of the most drastic steps yet taken by a planning authority in response to fires at battery energy storage system (BESS) sites in CA & NY over the past two years.
