  • The next Coaching for Impact Webinar hosted by Jackie Reynolds, University of Staffordshire RIIS takes place on 4 November and will focus on coaching for mid-career researchers. Saskia Walcott will draw on her experiences of coaching mid-career academics, including women of colour who have not been brought up in the UK, and share some insights on the needs of this group and how research impact managers without the benefit of a global majority lived experience can sensitively support their colleagues. Dr. Katy Richmond Mahoney, PhD. VRDF. FRGS will share her experiences delivering a bespoke coaching programme for MCRs at the University of Surrey, its impact on those involved and how research culture funding has enabled other universities to set up similar coaching for MCRs programmes. Ged Hall will explore the nuances and rhythms of research impact coaching mid-career academics. Using vignettes from his 13 years of practice in providing coaching at the University of Leeds, he will draw on the practice literature, ‘Self as Coach, Self as Leader’ by Pamela McLean PhD and set out some key questions attendees can use to define their approach to coaching this diverse and inspiring group. There is a fantastic opportunity to be part of refreshing ARMA UK (Association of Research Managers and Administrators)'s Professional Development Framework (PDF). When it was first launched 10 years ago it was groundbreaking and inspired similar PDFs from our sister research management associations around the world. We are looking for a consultant to help us transform it into a digital resource and update the content to reflect the diverse career pathways that have emerged in #researchmanagement in the last decade. If you are interested in taking this one as a 6 month project you can find more on the website: https://lnkd.in/eBrBuR7B #RMA #professionaldevelopment #researchmanagers. Please repost.

We are running an online half-day training workshop on 6 November for impact case study reviewers. We’ll explore what to look for when assessing reach and significance, best practice in impact evidence and the variation in how impact is realised, presented and evidenced across different disciplines. There are many new impact manager recruits across the sector and academic impact leads who are being asked to review impact case studies for the first time. This training will give them the experience and confidence to assess their UoA impact case studies and contribute to mock REF panels many HEIs will be organising for next year. Places are limited, so take a look and sign up quickly if you are interested. https://lnkd.in/eRVHTYy2 #ImpactSkillsTraining #ImpactCaseStudies #ResearchImpact

Research Impact Manager, Associate Professor. Staffordshire University

This week, we were delighted to host In our Catalyst Building a full day workshop as part of the UKRI policy engagement training programme. The programme is designed to support and equip UK researchers to translate their research into policy insights and real-world impacts. It is developed and delivered by the Institute for Methods Innovation, Fast Track Impact Ltd and Walcott Communications Ltd on behalf of ESRC and NERC. The day was expertly facilitated by Saskia Walcott and Jonathan Breckon, and attended by researchers from all across the UK, including a team of our Staffordshire University researchers. Our very own Professor Steven Griggs (Director of the Centre for Business Innovation and the Regions) gave an excellent talk where he reflected on his many years of engaging with policymakers. His raw honesty and acknowledgement of the challenges and imperfections made for a compelling talk that was both resonant and inspiring. There was so much learning and rich discussion, and these are just a few of my takeaways: - The important of anticipating the future needs of policymakers and looking out for the 'policy window of opportunity' - The value of professional bodies and Learned Societies (there was quite a discussion about the difference between these two, plus the 'grey areas'!) - The emotional labour involved in engaging with policymakers: to what degree this is inevitable (or not) and how to navigate it. - The discussion on how to connect with international policymakers was thought-provoking. Whilst there are many ways to connect with policymakers at a national level, it still seems very individualised at an international level, relying largely on personal connections. I wonder whether there is scope for new networks, or even 'Areas of Research Interest' initiatives from international organisations? It was brilliant to meet so many researchers doing really interesting work, and it would be great to share any further reflections from anyone who attended. Thanks to Saskia and Jonathan for a brilliant day - we loved hosting this event!

  • It seems an age since our summer webinar on evidencing impact in the arts and humanities. Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to the conversation. It sparked some interesting discussions about the challenges, complexities and ethical considerations of evidencing engagement and impact and demonstrating the value of our work as researchers. Helen Duffy has captured some of the key talking points and her reflections in this blog. And if you missed the webinar or would like a recap, there’s also a link to the webinar recording! • We get asked lots of questions about impact. One of the most common is, how do I actually do it? From our experience, researchers and Universities have far more to gain when impact is fully embedded in research culture. That's why, throughout the Impact Integrators™ impact skills training programme, you'll hear our founder Saskia Walcott talk about ‘changing your mindset’. Whether applying for a grant, developing an impact case study, or building your community and stakeholder impact network, our self-paced online training is designed to make impact feel second nature to researchers. Courses start again in September. Find out more at https://lnkd.in/edT_5Qsf #ResearchImpact #ImpactSkillsTraining #Research #Researchers

  • What I love about the #researchimpact space is that it never stands still, you are always learning. Over the last few years I have been encouraged that the impact sector has not shied away from looking at impact practice through an #EDI lens and calling out where it has come up wanting. Asking questions about #ethical practice in engagement is essential and segue into considerations of #researchculture.

Last Thursday with my colleague Helen Farmer, I had the privilege of attending a workshop hosted by Perivoli Africa Research Centre (PARC) that explored the implications of the #AfricaCharter for research impact. This is an Africa-led initiative “to advance of research that will advance and uphold the continent’s production of scientific knowledge”. It was a fascinating two hours hearing from scholars who collaborate with African colleagues about the challenges they have experienced due to university bureaucracy and due diligence but also the particular demands of REF #impact. This event was very much a ‘starter for 10’. It highlighted the risks of extractive practices and tokenistic attempts at creating pathways to impact to ‘internationalise’ research impact. One of the most interesting discussion was how the REF template can encourage a ‘hero narrative’ that runs the risk of misrepresenting and downplaying the essential and valuable contribution of partners. I often say that the ics is a ‘peculiar beast’ that represents a very particular and narrow version of reality for the purpose of assessment of reach and significance. Writing case studies that effectively convey the rich tapestry of contributions that lead to ‘REFable’ research impact is a challenge due to the practical constraints of the word count and template. No easy answers but a discussion that is vital and critically needed now as the community and @UKRI_Research England develop the guidance for #REF2029. I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic: Alex Lewis Jo Lakey Andrew Wray Mark Reed @Lucy Series Rebecca Fairbairn Allen Mukhwana John Kirkland, O.B.E Silke Blohm Faatihah Niyi-Odumosu, MBChB, MSc, PhD, PGCTHE, FHEA Sarah Naomi Lee Sarah Njeri
