💊 Understanding Pill Burden in Dysphagia 💬 For individuals with dysphagia, managing medications can be a challenge due to swallowing difficulties. Pill burden can significantly impact health and quality of life for our clients. As part of dysphagia management in speech and language therapy, we promote strategies to make taking pills safer and more comfortable for our clients, such as: 👉Liaising with a doctor or pharmacist about adapting the medication format. 👉Requesting information about specific gels or aids that can support swallowing pills. 👉Taking pills with thicker consistencies if appropriate. 👉Speaking to your doctor or pharmacist about a medication review. 👉Practicing safe swallowing techniques. 💊 Addressing pill burden is essential for effective treatment and improved well-being. 🗣️ Let’s make every swallow safe and manageable! 🌟 #Dysphagia #SpeechandLanguageTherapy #PillBurden #SwallowingDisorders #SLP #HealthAndWellbeing #SafeSwallowing #MedicationManagement #QualityOfLife #SLP #SLT #dysphagiaawareness #dysphagiatherapy #walkthetalkspeechandlanguagetherapy #adultneuro #adultneurorehab #swallowingrehabilitation

🫴Speech and language therapy can be challenging for our clients for several reasons, and the reasons go beyond just ‘helping people talk.’ Let us tell you why 👇 👉Speech therapy can involve delving into deep-seated emotions, past traumas, and unresolved issues, which can be emotionally intense and overwhelming. Opening up and discussing personal struggles also requires a level of vulnerability, which can be uncomfortable and challenging for some of our clients. At Walk the Talk, we admire this level of strength. 👉Some clients have a subconscious bias to change or may use defense mechanisms to avoid confronting difficult truths about their new reality. Let’s not forget, change is daunting, especially something as big as impaired communication. Clients may therefore fear the uncertainty that comes with exploring rehabilitation or changing behaviours. At Walk the Talk, we appreciate this strength. 👉Therapy cannot thrive without some level of introspection and self-reflection. This may require clients to question some long-held beliefs, assumptions, or narratives about themselves and their lives, which can be unsettling. At Walk the Talk, we work with our clients to reflect on their overall journey, not just the destination. 👉Building trust and rapport with a therapist takes time and effort, especially for clients who have had negative experiences or mistrust in the past. Speech and language therapy is a gradual process, which includes varying pace, changes and setbacks. It’s how you use your strength to overcome these aspects which is key. At Walk the Talk, we strive to help you stay strong. #slt #speechandlanguagetherapy #strength #neuro #adultsspeechtherapy #walkthetalkspeechandlanguagetherapy #parkinsons #mnd #dementia #palliativecare #slp #sltpeeps

✍️ “Drawing is not just what you see, but what the mind perceives.” In the world of healthcare, quite often an individual’s innate abilities, skills, and strengths can get lost amidst the backdrops of the medical and therapy model approaches. Here at Walk the Talk we like to celebrate our clients’ excellence in various endeavors, whether it’s in the arts, sports, academia, or professional fields. This type of creative talent (or any talent for that matter!) allows individuals to contribute uniquely and fulfill their potential, leading to personal fulfilment and often benefiting the therapy process as a whole. In the portraits above, our client Richard has sketched himself in the schoolboy era, which he says is full of his fondest memories. This is followed by a sketch of his granddaughter, his proudest joy. We look forward to seeing more of your sketches Richard! With love, WTT. #walkthetalkspeechandlanguagetherapy #sketch #portrait #slt #slp #bucksbusiness #buckinghamshire #voicetherapy #portrait #londonart #picoftheday

👷♂️Client J is currently studying engineering and preparing for his exams, whilst undergoing speech and language therapy for psychogenic stammer. His focus right now is to pass these exams in the hope of becoming an automotive engineer in the near future. Not only is he motivated to excel in his exams, but he also endeavors to continue speech therapy sessions to gain more ‘control’ over his speech, especially in the professional environments he will soon embark on which is important. 👷♂️So, to maximise progress in sessions, we’ve used his revision as ‘topic cards’ to practice fluency strategies, in particular pacing, as clearing these difficult exams is at the forefront of his mind and perhaps is causing some anxiety. When working in this field , it’s crucial to understand which factors hold personal significance for your clients and to bear this in mind when delivering therapy interventions. 👷♂️When there are other things running through your clients mind, it’s better to address them, because it allows them to acknowledge and process their thoughts and feelings, which in turn can improve communication. By tailoring therapy to the client’s interests, ironically, you may also find yourself exchanging insights on various different subjects outside of different communication profiles or impairments - all through one task. 👷♂️With communication challenges, anyone, regardless of background or origin, could have valuable insights to offer. We can all benefit from each other’s experiences, as we share a common understanding of passion, dedication, and commitment, whether it’s because you’re learning about engineering, speech strategies or otherwise! 🙏🏻We take pride in collaborating with clients from diverse backgrounds and vocations. We believe that the most effective therapeutic progress is achieved by considering individuals’ interests and passions, which is always at the heart of our work and what we find results in therapeutic gains made. ✨We wish client J all the best for the future ✨ #outwiththeoldinwiththenew #slt #slp #walkthetalkspeechandlanguagetherapy #stammering #stammeringawareness #buckinghamshire #bucksbusiness #engineeringlife
