Horsham New WwTW: Southern Water’s multi-million pound upgrade to boost the water quality of the River Arun and cater for the significant growth forecast. Southern Water are investing £31m to upgrade Horsham New Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW) in West Sussex, which will improve the site’s treatment processes and capacity, and boost the quality of the final effluent returning to the River Arun, thanks to a range of new hi-tech machinery, control and monitoring systems, as well as the replacement and refurbishment of existing equipment. The main areas of work to meet the 4 project drivers were: 1: Replacing the existing 40 year old inlet screens. 2: Extending the existing deep bed sand filter. 3: The addition of a new moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) nitrification process stage to the treatment process. 4: An enhancement to the works’ alkalinity dosing capability, with a new 80m3 bulk storage facility. The major upgrade started on site in September 2022 and is being delivered by CMDP JV, a joint venture between Costain and MWH Treatment. Completion of the works is expected in spring 2025. Lamerton STW: Reed bed and associated feed pumping station solution for nature-based phosphorus removal Lamerton is a village with a population of just over 800 people, located 3 miles north-west of the town of Tavistock in west Devon. Due to the reduction in permitted phosphorus discharge levels introduced under the Water Industry National Environment Programme (WINEP) and the existing aluminium permit on site, an upgrade was required to ensure the permitted Environment Agency consent permit was achieved. This required the installation of an new low-carbon phosphorus removal process within the boundaries of the existing sewage treatment works. Working with ARM Ltd (specialists in wastewater treatment using constructed wetlands, reed beds and natural wastewater solutions), South West Water and Galliford Try successfully trialled the UK’s first full-scale reactive media reed bed at Wilmington STW. Due to this success, ARMPhos™ technology would be used at Lamerton STW; treating flows 23% higher than at Wilmington (FFT Wilmington: 3.8 l/s | FFT Lamerton: 4.7 l/s). Keadby Terminal Assisted Outfall Pumping Station: Asset refurbishment to maintain flood resilience, while reducing both the operational carbon footprint and the overall impact of the project upgrade. Keadby Terminal Assisted Outfall (TAO) is a strategically important asset, protecting homes, businesses and agricultural land from flooding in the Isle of Axholme. The TAO was originally constructed in 1939 and required upgrading and modernisation to ensure the continued operation of the pumping station as resilience and reliability had been lost due to age, obsolescence and general wear and tear, resulting in the need for a major investment. Keadby TAO is the outfall for the River Torne within the Isle of Axholme to the tidal River Trent. It originally comprised a gravity sluice which maintained water levels within the Isle of Axholme and discharged fluvial flow to the tidal Trent when tide levels permitted. High flows were pumped via six pumps, providing approximately 32m3/s discharge capacity when required. The upgrade included: 1. A comprehensive heavy electrical system replacement. 2. Replacement of all pipework. 3. Replacement of the entire control system. 4. The installation of six bespoke fish-friendly electric vertical lift pumps providing 19.2m3/s discharge capacity against a hydrostatic head of 3.7m when required. 5. A complete redesign of the outfall structure to provide three individual discharge cells which will allow safe access to the twelve (1.8m wide) gravity/pumped culverts and twelve 1.8m tidal flaps for inspection and maintenance purposes. Leominster WwTW: New tertiary nitrifying sand filter process stage with additional upgrade works on existing assets to achieve a high quality effluent. Leominster WwTW is a medium sized biofilter sludge works, treating a population equivalent of approximately 11,000. Welsh Water have invested £12.1m to deliver the process enhancements at the works as part of Welsh Waters’s commitment to deliver on improved water quality in the Wye River basin catchment. In advance of the improvement scheme, the works comprised an inlet works, primary settlement tank, seven mineral media biofilters, two humus settlement tanks, ferric dosing, two storm tanks and sludge storage. The works treated mainly domestic sewage from the catchment of Leominster, Herefordshire. The upgraded Leominster WwTW is designed to cater for increased treatment flows equating to a design horizon population equivalent of 16,685 (46% growth) and a tightening of the phosphorus permit from 1mg/l to 0.5mg/l. The main elements of work included new tertiary nitrifying sand filters, new ferric sulphate and sodium bicarbonate dosing systems, the inlet works refurbishment and electrical works and MCCs. Perth (Bertha Park) WwTW: Design and construction of modern sewage treatment facility to meet future population growth Perth Sewage Treatment Centre (STC) is located to the south-east of Perth city centre, on the banks of the River Tay. The facility treats the wastewater requirements for Perth and its surrounding areas. Perth STC was first constructed in the early 1970s. It was built to help with the growing population and industrial sector within the Perth area. Over the years, the treatment centre has undergone various upgrades and expansions to meet increasing demand and to incorporate advances in treatment technologies. The latest upgrade project is referred to as Perth (Bertha Park) WwTW. The driver behind the latest upgrades and growth to Perth STC stems from a greenfield development project called Bertha Park which will see the construction of more than 3,000 new homes and employment land within the Perth & Kinross Council area. This new development will see the works population equivalent (PE) rise from c.70,000 to c.105,000. The work involves new civil construction, installation of pipework, valves, instrumentation and control systems. New fine bubble diffusers and additional blowers will be installed to meet air requirements, and IFAS media will be added to support growth until 2033. Lower Woodburn WwPS: The successful delivery of a £1.8m wastewater pumping station in the Greenisland Drainage Catchment to improve water quality in Belfast Lough Lower Woodburn Wastewater Pumping Station (WwPS) serves the Greenisland Drainage Catchment and is located close to the town of Carrickfergus on the foreshore of Belfast Lough. The storm outfall from the WwPS flows directly into the lough. Although recognised that discharges have minimal impact on the Belfast Lough Shellfish Water Protected Area (SWPA), there is localised impact and a need to protect and preserve amenity on the accessible shoreline. Upgrading of the WwPS was needed to comply with the Environmental Regulator’s (NIEA) consent requirements. As part of Belfast’s strategic ‘Living with Water Programme’ (LwWP), NI Water has invested £1.8m to upgrade Lower Woodburn WwPS by increasing the volume of storm emergency overflow storage and installing a static screen. The solution also facilitates proposed housing (315 units) and hospitality/recreational developments that discharge directly to the WwPS and delivers storm separation of 17.8 hectares of impermeable ground. The project delivers against the LwWP goals of PROTECT against Flooding, ENHANCE the Environment and GROW the Economy.
