Have you ever thought about recycling rice water? 🍚 This week is #NationalRecyclingWeek and, as part of our Water Efficiency in Faith and Diverse Communities project, funded by Ofwat as part of the Breakthrough Challenge, we are looking at innovative ways to engage people from different cultures in water saving 💧 One of the areas we have been looking at is how water can be saved in cooking, in particularly rice washing. Rice washing is a common cooking practice in South Asian communities. In fact, many South Asian families wash rice between five to seven times before cooking 🚰 By reducing this to just a couple of times, families could save up to five litres of water. To explore this further, we teamed up with Ping Coombes, Malaysian Chef and MasterChef winner, and sustainable gardening charity, Garden Organic, to understand how much water could be saved from rice washing and look at the benefits that recycling this water could bring to the garden 🌻 See the full video: https://lnkd.in/e89qEvAM #Water #WaterSaving #RiceWashing #SouthAsianCooking #Recycling

Waterwise welcomes the review of the water sector announced by Secretary of State for Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Rt Hon Steve Reed OBE MP, last month - to 'shape further legislation that will fundamentally transform how our entire water system works and clean up our rivers, lakes and seas for good' and 'deliver a radical, long-term approach to reform the water sector and ensure we can sustain our communities and the environment in the decades to come'. For this to work, water efficiency needs to be at the heart of the review, and reflected in its scope and objectives. So we've sent Ministers our list of things we think must be included in scope and objectives of the Water Review, to ensure that water is used wisely every day, everywhere, by everyone - and that we have enough water to go round, for economic growth, social justice and the environment. This includes rebalancing some priorities - and scooping up policy on things like housing, energy, transport and the economy, which sits with other government departments. We remain really supportive of the new government's support for water efficiency, and as the campaigning organisation, we will also keep up pressure for ambition and delivery. There's a gap between the water we have and the water we need of 5 billion litres a day in the next couple of decades, and water efficiency is expected to make up half that gap. Onwards and upwards!

🌍💧 Last night's 50L Home Coalition Action Paper Launch Event was a brilliant gathering of experts discussing the vital Water-Energy-Carbon Nexus for homes. Insightful panels, featuring our CEO Nicci Russell (she/her) FIWater, highlighted the need for government action, innovative tech, and behaviour change to push for sustainable living. A Keynote from Mete Coban MBE, Deputy Mayor of London, stressed social justice in resource consumption, and there were great takeaways about how policy and cross-sector collaboration can drive real change! Exciting times ahead with the London pilot on the horizon! Check out the action paper and join the movement towards a net zero, 50L per day future!  https://lnkd.in/eHGMWTkS #50LHome #Sustainability #WECNexus #Innovation #NetZeroLiving
