Reflecting on Day Three of our CPCC Programme – Thursday, 24th October We began a powerful and thought-provoking third day with a deep dive into the critical issue of hate crimes, examining the scope of xenophobia, exclusion, and racially motivated offences. Through engaging discussions, we explored how restorative justice (RJ) can play a role in neutral-led mediation and education. The morning session continued with a demonstration of “The Mad Hatters”, a real life scenario illustrating the challenges of working with communities in conflict. Addressing themes of xenophobia and faith-based hatred, this discussion was specifically relevant to our Alex NGO, where these challenges remain a persistent threat. After lunch, we tackled one of the most sensitive and crucial topics—recovering from being stigmatised after serving time in prison. A story of one of our Alex NGO’s founders reduced us to tears as he shared his life story and the impact that RJ had had on his family reunification. The workshop focused on establishing protocols that prioritise the support of victims and survivors while holding offenders accountable, underscoring the importance of restorative justice in addressing serious abuse within the broader social context, particularly within the troubling blesser culture. A poignant final mediation titled “A Man’s Needs,” was an eye-opening look at sexual harassment and rape in the community with a focus on facilitating the RJ process. The sensitivity and care with which this issue was addressed left a lasting impact on all participants. As we continue to reflect on the day, we are reminded of the power of mediation to foster understanding, accountability, and, ultimately, healing. The feedback and highlights shared of the CPCC programme has not only enriched our knowledge but also deepened our commitment to using restorative justice to navigate difficult and painful community issues. #RestorativeJustice #Mediation #CommunityHealing #ConflictResolution #MasterMediation #RJ

Khulisa Social Solutions and The Society of Mediators 🌟 CPCC Programme Highlights – Day 2 – 23rd October 🌟 What an insightful day! From diving into neighbourhood conflicts in our “Toy Story” mediation exercise to tackling tough topics like domestic violence and addictions through restorative justice (RJ), we explored how mediators can create safe spaces for healing and recovery. In the afternoon, we delved into the role of the mediator and built on our understanding of neutrality. We went onto explore the power of traditional conflict resolution methods alongside modern RJ techniques. We discussed how mediation can bring communities together after environmental and other crimes. The day wrapped up with a lively dialogue about mediators' responsibility to maintain confidentiality, even when serious crimes are committed. It was a challenging but crucial conversation! #RestorativeJustice #Mediation #CommunityHealing #ConflictResolution #RJ #neutrality #selfawareness #dialoguecircles #accesstojustice #catalysingchange feat. We are at A&O Shearman in Johannesburg this week with Khulisa Social Solutions co-facilitating a ground-breaking and impactful collaboration to address South Africa's critical social challenges through advanced mediator training on 22 to 24 October 2024 with The Society of Mediators. The restorative justice initiative, titled "Catalysing Peacebuilders for Community Cohesion"(CPCC), is a sunflower initiative that merges Khulisa’s extensive 27-year experience in community development and social upliftment with SoM’s globally recognised expertise in mediation training. This initiative embodies the power of restorative justice to heal social fractures by equipping participants with mediation and conflict resolution tools tailored to the unique challenges faced by South African communities. It is #blackhistorymonth and I am #thinking about many of the challenges that small businesses are facing, particularly those consultancies led by ethnic minority females. TL:DR 👉 we’re the 💣, you should hire us, no one needs to know you don’t know how to manage your leadership team 🤷🏽♀️ ============================= I’ve been thinking for a long time about how much advocacy there is about a lack of services being provided by businesses owned by people like me to be able to solve some of the problems that non-diverse companies face. I've been reflecting on how The WayFinders Group is not used to best effect and why. 🤷🏽♀️ At first I thought it was because we weren't visible enough. 🤷🏽♀️ Then I thought it was because we hadn't been in existence for long enough. 🤷🏽♀️ I've come to the realization that maybe people just don't want what we're offering. A LOT of small businesses are really, really struggling. I know the big businesses are struggling too, but it would make such a difference if people actually took Black History Month as an opportunity to endorse some of the creative ideas and the offers that are being provided by consultancies that approach things in a very different way, to be able to address many of the challenges that the bigger businesses are facing, so that they can have longevity, so that they can have impact, so that they can be transformed and make a difference. What if the one decision you made to support Black History Month was to use a Black-owned business to provide services to your business / charity / social enterprise. The theme of Black History Month this year is #reclaimingnarratives, and I just want to reclaim the narrative here: ‼️I know we're worth it. ‼️I know we're worth investing in. ‼️I know that we offer a premium product. ‼️ I know that we can solve problems. ‼️ I know that we are relational. ‼️I know that we are known. ‼️I know that we are not being invited into spaces that we haven’t forced our way into. So in the spirit of reclaiming narratives, what I would like is to challenge the procurement teams and the HR teams on their diverse supplier lists. I would really like The WayFinders Group to get into the spaces where we can have the greatest impact. I appreciate that company leaders want to protect their pride; it’s hard to acknowledge that you're struggling to make decisions or you don't know how to collaborate effectively, or you don't know how to have good /effective conversations, but the whole premise is nobody needs to know that we were there, so why don't you just call us or email us on contact@charttheuncharted.com More information is available on our website: www.charttheuncharted.com #TOTD #thoughtoftheday #thoughtfortheday #leadership #reflections #strategy #mediation #training #decisionmaking #governance #culture #problemsolving #reclaimingnarratives #procurement #diversesuppliers #relationship #solutions #smallbusiness #entrepreneur #authenticity

📣 It's time for a change in UK company law. The Better Business Act is calling for an amendment to Section 172 of the Companies Act. This would ensure that company directors align social and environmental impact with shareholder returns, creating a better balance for all. We've seen the consequences of poor corporate governance in high-profile failures like P&O, The Post Office, and Thames Water. These are just a few examples, but they come with real costs to us all – workers, communities, and the environment. At a time when urgent challenges are everywhere, we need businesses to thrive, but not at the expense of people and the planet. That's why 2,900 businesses and organisations – including Iceland Foods, Virgin, and the Institute of Directors (IoD) of Directors – are backing this campaign. Let's ensure business can create profit and benefit society. 🌍🤝 Learn more about the campaign: https://lnkd.in/gBqhbVx

There are some very wise people on LinkedIn. It would appear that Fiona Ras-Jones is one of them. 👇 She explains that there are four reasons businesses experience tension between people and profit: 1. The company has a cause but not a purpose. 2. The purpose isn't well-defined. 3. There's no strategy in place to deliver the purpose. 4. The team doesn't understand the connection between the purpose and the profit. Why do we like this? Because these are the sorts of things that get in the way of organisations achieving their missions. We want you to achieve your mission so you can make a difference. If you make a difference, we make a difference. So if you are a leader in a business struggling to make decisions on what your mission was / is / should be / could be / will be, and clarity as to how you should achieve that mission, get in touch today on www.charttheuncharted.com. #clarity #vision #mission #values #purpose #alignment #leadershipdevelopment #effectiveness #decisionmaking #consensus #growth

I was chatting with a B Corp the other day, and they told me, “There’s always going to be tension between purpose and profit in a business. It’s just how it works.” But I had to disagree. Many businesses believe that there’s this inevitable clash. On one side, you have people in the business pushing for social and environmental impact, and on the other, people focused more on making money. Every decision is seen through that lens. Purpose or profit. The thing is, in Mission-Led Businesses, that friction doesn’t exist because they have aligned business models. The more they sell, the more they achieve their purpose. And I'm not talking about "buy one, give one" here. I mean that they make a positive impact THROUGH their products and services. Take a look at these for example: - Tony's Chocolonely: For every chocolate bar they sell they're reducing slavery in the chocolate supply chain (compared with standard chocolate). - OceanSaver: For every cleaning product they sell they reduce plastic and harmful chemicals in our water system (compared with standard cleaning products). - Wholegrain Digital: For every website they design they reduce the carbon footprint of the internet (compared with standard websites). In businesses like these, purpose and profit aren’t at odds. Every department whether it’s marketing, sales, finance, HR, IT or operations are pulling in the same direction. They are all focused on how to deliver their mission profitably and each of them are clear on their role in that. So when there's tension, what’s going on? It’s often due to one (or more) of these four things: - The company has a cause but not a purpose - The purpose isn't well-defined - There’s no strategy in place to deliver the purpose - The team don't understand the connection between the purpose and profit But these are all fixable. You don't need to live with them. So what do you think? Can purpose and profit co-exist without friction? —-------------------- If you’re interested in more content about Mission-Led Businesses, follow me and click the 🔔 to stay updated.
