"Poverty is an industry that can be dismantled." Lebohang Liepollo Pheko, senior research fellow at Trade Collective, offers a nuanced critique of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Pheko argues that the SDGs are rooted in flawed development models that prioritise economic growth over addressing structural inequalities. Instead, she advocates for redefining poverty to emphasise power, autonomy, and dignity. I'm in New York this week to present my latest report to the United Nations General Assembly on the #BurnoutEconomy: the economic choices that are creating an unseen #MentalHealth crisis for people in #poverty (Thursday 24 October). More information including the link to the report can be found here: https://lnkd.in/ehJPzfbw Among its recommendations, the report considers how a universal basic income could make a major contribution to improving the mental health of people in poverty, and I encourage States to move beyond narrowly targeted social protection schemes and conditional cash transfers to explore the possibility of establishing such unconditional forms of support. The long anticipated Mario Draghi’s report on the future of European competitiveness was published on September 9th. The report offers important insights to how coordination mechanisms and investment levels across the EU could be improved to restore and boost European competitiveness. 📈 However the report relies heavily on traditional and narrow notions of central concepts such as productivity, prosperity and competitiveness itself. Read through a lens of sustainable and inclusive wellbeing, crucial aspects of the current discourse around measuring development are missing in Draghi’s report. 🌱 A group of MERGE consortium members has written a blog post reflecting on the report and offering perspectives on how a more holistic understanding of productivity could help to strengthen European competitiveness.
