Elizabeth talks to Hilary Hil is the founder of the purposeful walking app trundl. As a youngster she was hiking up the side of hills with her parents and brother on a regular basis from their base in Gloucestershire where she was born and loved it. With Yorkshire parents a move back up north to Cheshire happened at 19 and she has stayed there ever since. In her late forties, circumstances changed dramatically. Not only did she require surgery on a compressed spinal cord, but in early 2020 she learned that her painful legs were a sign of undiagnosed hip-dysplasia. Finding herself unable to walk the long distances she had previously loved to do, it quite literally changed her life. Always one to look for the positive, Hil’s slower walks brought a new perspective on the physical and mental health benefits that even short walks can bring. This triggered a long held idea about raising money for charity and her thought: “What if an everyday walk could make a social difference and raise money for charity. What impact could we all have together for collective good?” In 2021, this idea came to life in the walking for charity app, trundl. No stranger to start up world as this is Hil’s third business, Hil, along with the trundl team have gone on to win an Innovate UK Fast Start grant award and she has been a panel speaker at Jodrell Bank as part of the Warrington and Cheshire Economic Forum in 2023. With a nomination this month for Person of Purpose in the Northern Power Womens Awards she is chuffed to bits that someone nominated her but equally still looks over her shoulder to see who they are talking about. Although very chatty and outgoing, it’s not Hil’s comfort zone to be in the limelight and she has had to learn to grow into that part of the business role and embrace the spotlight.

Elizabeth speaks to Julie. Julie Johns MBE - Training Provider to Employers on Impact of Domestic Abuse, Stalking & Harassment in the Workplace (CPD accredited) Keynote Speaker Training provider to frontline and key workers on all topics relating to Domestic Abuse. Julie is an social entrepreneur and has spent 20 years supporting survivors of domestic abuse and raising awareness of these issues. She has been recognised for this service through being awarded an MBE and the local Compassionate Entrepreneur award. Her motivation for establishing Safe Space Consultancy in 2015 was in response to recognising that full-time working professionals who were experiencing domestic abuse did not have equal access to domestic abuse services. Julie recognised the need for employers to address the impact of domestic abuse in the workplace, and has achieved this through raising awareness and keynote speaking, delivery of CPD Accredited training provision and support with domestic abuse, stalking and perpetrator policies. This work is now supported by the Domestic Abuse Act 2021 and the statutory guidance for employers. It’s important for employers to understand that for many the workplace is often respite from home, and therefore can be a route for escape from a toxic relationship. The Covid pandemic and lockdown caused further concern for employers if the home was not a safe space to be. By engaging in training and implementing policies, employers from all sectors can confidently recognise and support staff who may be experiencing domestic abuse. The training can also cover recognising the early signs of perpetrator behaviour such as cyber-stalking, bullying and sexual harassment in the workplace. Julie provides further training to frontline and key workers on all topics relating to Domestic Abuse such as Coercive Control, Male Victims, Bi-Directional Abuse, Family Abuse, Elder Abuse, Stalking within Domestic Abuse, Safety Planning, Signposting and Referral and Post Separation Abuse.

Elizabeth talks to Farzana Farzana’s experience as a single mum returning to work after raising children at home set her on a journey to empower mothers who struggle to keep abreast of current job skills and training whilst raising children at home. Her research has found that one of the greatest challenges mothers face is finding work in a world of rapid technological advances. This can lead to a real lack of confidence in re-entering the workplace. Farzana also found that courses are often difficult to access because mothers are unable to work and fund them. She created Mothersintowork.com as a platform for mothers to connect with companies to address this issue. Her 30 years of experience working in commercial environments as a business development manager have given her a thorough understanding of the commercial needs of organisations and how learners can access training. She has a proven record of working in educational and business settings and running courses for adults. She specialises in equality, diversity and inclusion.
