Celebrating our colleagues with Hispanic heritage during Hispanic Heritage Month. 🎊 Today, we spotlight Maria Sol DI TOMASSO, Transformation Lead based in Paris, France, who was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Speaking on her heritage she shared, “My Hispanic Heritage is a vital part of who I am. Argentinians tend to be very passionate, and we take our love for little things to the next level. When we are into something, every little detail matters in our quest to make it perfect." She continued, "As an Argentinian, a big part of our culture revolves around food. Our weekly “Asado” is more than just a barbecue. It’s a social event that happens every Sunday afternoon, where we gather family and friends to enjoy grilled meats, yummy desserts, and spending quality time together. Today we're celebrating the incredible James Dornor, CEO of Driven By Us, who is included in our REflect Top 24 Role Models for 2024 list. James has a combination of 13-years experience combined working across automotive & motorsport industries, using his expertise to become the founder of the first ethnic minority community club to be recognised by Motorsport UK. In his previous role he was responsible for maintaining all on and off car electronics & systems on a wide range of F1 cars driven by Sir Lewis Hamilton MBE. He featured in the Hamilton Commission report & smart video report as well as speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live about the state of diversity in F1 in 2021. Q1. What is your greatest achievement in your career? "My biggest achievement is setting up Driven By Us, the successful community driven organisation dedicated to promoting inclusion in motorsport. Under my leadership, Driven By Us has launched several impactful initiatives, including interactive STEM workshops, community engagement programs, and exclusive behind-the-scenes experiences at major motorsport events." Q2. Who or what inspires you in your work? “I take significant inspiration from my family, who have supported and encouraged me throughout my journey in life. From an early age, they instilled core values of hard work and belief in my potential, which have been fundamental in shaping my character and ambitions, even when I haven’t been the smartest in the room.” Q3. Please provide one piece of advice for future global ethnic-majority engineers. “Stay determined as challenges and setbacks are part of any journey, but perseverance and determination will help you overcome obstacles and achieve your goals. Juan Carlos is leading a session on Wednesday 9th October focused around how RS Group plc has reduced cost and accelerated releases by moving to GraphOS Router. Did you know that singer songwriter Labi Siffre worked for RadioSpares (now RS) in our Epworth Street order office in London, shortly before making the UK pop charts with his first single ‘It must be love’ in 1971? This song would later go on to be a ska-pop hit for Madness over a decade later. Siffre’s songs have been covered by legends such as Rod Stewart, Olivia Newton-John and Kelis. He has even been sampled by rap royalty including Jay-Z and Eminem. However, his most famous song of all must be his anti-apartheid anthem “(Something Inside) So Strong” which reached number 4 in the UK charts when he released it himself in 1987 and was later covered by Kenny Rogers. At the beginning of 2024 he made the step from one RS to another as he sat down for an interview with Rolling Stone magazine. Ever wondered what life is like as a National Account Manager at RS? We sat down with Kate Hurl to find out. Q1. Hi Kate, what does a typical day look like for you? Kate: "A typical day can involve visiting customer sites, learning about the maintenance and operations challenges that their businesses face, and collaborating with colleagues and suppliers to develop tailored solutions in order to help them to operate more economically and sustainably." Q2. What is your favourite thing about working at RS? Kate: "One of the things I love about working at RS is that no two days are the same! RS is such a diverse and innovative business, and every customer will have a unique set of challenges, there is always something new to learn. Being able to support our customers to meet their business goals is the most rewarding part of my role." Q3. Do you have a favourite memory from your three years with the business so far? Kate: "One of my favourite work memories is attending our annual RS Connect supplier exhibition and awards.
