We will be closing down the Weeva page in the next few weeks and want to ensure you don't miss a beat when we do.
🌍 A milestone moment 🌍 As we celebrate our fifth anniversary during #ClimateWeekNYC ⭕ we’re excited to share a series of announcements that will shape the future of the Travalyst coalition: 🚀 Our vision for the next five years: Travalyst will centralise the collection and distribution of sustainability data for key areas of travel and tourism. With a current focus on accommodation, long term we aim to consider other areas such as rail, activities and destinations. 🤝 Weeva: Travalyst has acquired the Weeva platform. As an organisation that shares our vision for democratising access to sustainability information in travel, the Weeva team built a highly regarded platform that we are aiming to integrate into our next phase of work. 🌆 Leadership expansion: we are expanding our leadership team with two executive hires: ➡️ Julie Cheetham joins the team as Chief Operations Officer. It seems as if African tourism properties are genuinely leading the charge in the sustainable tourism world – particularly regarding conservation and community initiatives. Nwabisa Mjoli and Gulam Sawant have spoken to hundreds of esteemed global hospitality professionals over the past year, yet they were blown away by the quality of conversation that they had at the Sustainable Travel & Tourism Africa Summit 2024 in Kenya last month. The event maintains a great balance of academics and the 'doers' i.e. people who put theory into practice. Our sustainability practitioner, Nwabisa, mentioned 4 key highlights: 1. Panel Discussion on Sustainability and Business Growth: One of the stand-out presentations was Prof. Marina Novelli's presentation on partnerships driving youth innovation in Sub-Saharan Africa's tourism, citing the #sttachangemakers model as pivotal for sustainable growth and empowerment among young entrepreneurs. 2. Role of Museums in Sustainable Tourism: Prof. Mary Gikungu from the National Museums of Kenya discussed museums' evolving role in shaping sustainable tourism policies, emphasizing the challenges facing heritage sites and the importance of youth engagement in heritage preservation. 3. Panel on Youth Capacities in Tourism: Moderated by Dr. Mary Mutisya, this session addressed enhancing youth skills through mentorship and curriculum reform to meet evolving industry demands. 4. Weeva's Workshop on Preparedness Planning: Our workshop emphasized the importance of preparedness and resilience in tourism. Participants engaged in creating action plans and examining case studies in group settings. The workshop also highlighted the effectiveness of leveraging Saas software platforms for streamlined planning and comprehensive risk management strategies.

Should we save jobs or save the earth? Julie Cheetham nailed the answer👇
The Travel Trade Talking Sustainability: An Editorial by Sustainable Journeys In a thought-provoking piece for TTG Media, Julie Cheetham, co-founder and managing director of Weeva, delves into the critical question facing the tourism industry today: "Should we save jobs or save the Earth?" As the summer travel season ramps up, the tension between economic benefits and environmental impact becomes increasingly palpable. The Balancing Act Tourism, a powerhouse industry generating millions of jobs worldwide, is under scrutiny for its substantial contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions—up to 11% according to the World Travel & Tourism Council. With the Glasgow Declaration for Climate Action in Tourism setting a target to halve carbon emissions by 2030, the industry must navigate the delicate balance between sustaining livelihoods and protecting the planet. A Just Transition Cheetham emphasises the importance of a just transition, advocating for collaboration with long-haul destinations to support greener practices while preserving jobs. The pandemic underscored this need as tourism-dependent communities faced severe economic hardship. The UN Tourism's Transforming Tourism for Climate Change initiative is leading efforts to promote sustainable practices and enhance resilience in the sector. Leading by Example Cheetham highlights several eco-committed properties, including Tswalu Kalahari Reserve and Grootbos Private Nature Reserve in South Africa, which serve as models of sustainability. These properties showcase practical steps that can be adopted at scale to reduce tourism's environmental footprint, such as conserving water and energy, reducing waste, and protecting natural habitats. The Role of Travel Agents Travel agents play a pivotal role in this transformation. Cheetham advises agents to prioritise accommodations with verifiable sustainability practices, book direct flights on lower-carbon airlines, and promote longer, more meaningful stays that support local communities and conservation efforts. The Path Forward The editorial concludes on a hopeful note, envisioning a future where travel continues to bring joy and economic opportunity, balanced with responsible environmental stewardship. By taking incremental yet impactful steps, the travel industry can mitigate its environmental impact while continuing to support millions of livelihoods globally. Julie Cheetham's insights remind us that sustainability in tourism is not just about grand gestures but also about everyday actions and informed choices that collectively lead to significant change. This perspective is crucial as we navigate the path to a more sustainable and equitable future for travel. Well said TTG, Julie and Weeva. Melissa Tilling, Editor
