One of my very first projects with Webb Yates Engineers is (very nearly) complete! Situated near Fulham, we worked with Wimshurst Pelleriti to reuse as much of the existing church building as possible, rather than demolishing the structure which had fallen into disrepair. We used the existing masonry church façade as a loadbearing element to support several new timber floors, creating new homes over a nursery at the ground level. Gyumri Market and Culinary School architectural design competition winners 🙌 Competing against over 150 design teams worldwide, our proposal with Mooradian Studio and The Stonemasonry Company Limited for Tumo Center for Creative Technologies introduces a civic farm at the intersection of public spaces, the culinary school, and the food market. The design fosters community involvement and sustainability, transforming the market into a dynamic centre for food education and local engagement. You may have come across the Mercato Metropolitano food markets dotted around London. The most recent one was completed in Ilford and has been assembled on a neglected parking lot. Together with Webb Yates Engineers its been designed in such a way that it can be taken down, reconfigured, and re-assembled elsewhere on other potential sites in the future, cleverly creating a flexible and sustainable design. Mercato itself is a fantastic initiative, offering small, artisanal restauranteurs access to their own facilities, fostering entrepreneurship and local culinary talent, and also benefiting the local communities by providing educational classes for kids and a variety of entertainment for adults. We're among those shortlisted for the British Museum Visitor Welcome Pavilions competition! Led by Studio Weave, our team includes Wright & Wright Architects, Tom Massey Studio and Daisy Froud. Planning has been approved on our project with Studio Weave and Project Centre Ltd to rejuvenate Lewisham’s outdoor market. Situated in the centre of the town surrounding Lewisham’s Grade II listed Clock Tower, the market is one of the last in London operating seven days a week and is beloved by the community. The new structures unify the commercial and public offering of the site, complement the existing business uses, and turn it into a local destination able to accommodate a range of events and night-time activities. The 26m long market house is formed of nine red sandstone stone columns supporting a pitched folded steel roof, while the canopies are fashioned from a 2.5mm curved steel sheet that spans 9.8m between a stainless-steel hollow section frame. The architectural vision was to offer tactile, natural materials at ground level, while referencing the area’s industrial past through the use of galvanised and stainless steel. With the entire structure exposed and several of the structural parts acting as an integrated guttering system, a high degree of architectural coordination was required. Glazed openings in the canopies and on both sides of the market house ensure sufficient natural light levels during the day, while efficient LED lighting supplements the hub after the sun sets. The design creates a vibrant, community focused public space that pays respects to Lewisham’s setting and historic marketplace, serving as a destination for the community and a driver for social interaction on a day-to-day basis. 🖼️ Secchi Smith #projectmilestone #planning #archtiecture #engineering #builtenvironment #stone #steel #community #retail #publicrealm
