We combine engineering and clinical sciences to ensure that innovative engineering solutions are reaching the clinic.
About us
At the Wellcome/EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences (WEISS), engineers, clinicians and scientists work together to develop technologies that enable safer and more effective treatments for patients across a wide range of conditions. Created at UCL in 2017, WEISS specialises in the fields of surgical and interventional sciences. The Centre is based at Charles Bell House, a building that brings together researchers from a wide range of departments at UCL, including Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering. These academic researchers work in partnership with clinical researchers from areas such as the UCL Division of Surgery & Interventional Sciences, and leading hospitals. This close, interdisciplinary integration allows clinicians to feed in their experiences to inform the direction and design of research, creating engineering solutions with the applications firmly in mind. It helps ensure that innovation is always directed towards patient benefit, also ensuring that patients are involved throughout the entire research process. At WEISS, the research is being developed with a wide range of clinical applications in mind, including cardiovascular, paediatric, ophthalmic, neurological and urological surgical interventions. In particular, the Centre aims to advance engineering sciences in intraoperative imaging and sensing, data fusion and extraction, human-technology interfaces, tissue modelling, interventional instrumentation, and surgical navigation.

So excited to be co-leading this new EPSRC Research and Partnerships Hub from Cavendish Laboratory - Department of Physics at the University of Cambridge with Dan Stoyanov from WEISS - Wellcome / EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences and Daniel Elson from Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery. We'll be joined by an amazing group of collaborators across the 3 centres and beyond to make the hub a new focus for optical and acoustic imaging in the UK and globally, including Rebecca Fitzgerald, Massimiliano di Pietro and Danielle Harper in Early Cancer Institute, University of Cambridge. Reach out if you're interested to learn more and get involved in the hub activities. More information coming early in 2025!

I had the pleasure of co-organizing this year’s Peter Kirstein Lecture at UCL (more info: https://lnkd.in/exPdwgry), where we welcomed the inspirational Prof. Hugh Herr and were honoured to have the distinguished Prof. Peter Kirstein family. It was a privilege to come together and celebrate Prof. Peter Kirstein’s legacy alongside his family and the UCL Computer Science community. The event also featured hands-on demos by our team (Anjana Wijekoon, Zhehua Mao, Laurent Mennillo, Ryman Hashem, Vanni Consumi, Chuang Lu) from the #SurgicalRobotVision group, WEISS - Wellcome / EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences, showcasing groundbreaking advancements in surgical soft robotics and surgical AI. A huge thank you to my fellow co-organizers—Vajeeha Farooq, Amid Ayobi, He WANG, Steve Hailes, Dr Victoria Austin, and Rui Loureiro—for making this event such a success. #PeterKirsteinLecture2024 #HughHerr #Innovation #Biomechatronics #SurgicalRobotics #surgicalAI #ArtificialIntelligence

We were delighted to have Professor Hugh Herr join us to present the Peter Kirstein Lecture 2024 this year. We’re excited to share highlights from the lecture, where Professor Herr (MIT), a leader in biomechatronics, talked about his personal journey which led to bionics research and delved into groundbreaking advances in bionic limbs. From tissue-synthetic interfaces to cutting-edge prosthetics, discover how his work is revolutionising mobility for many with limb differences. The day started with a private tour and demonstrations of our robotics, medical robotics and our Global Disability Innovation Hub for Hugh and guests from Peter Kirstein's family. Later, guests were treated to Hugh's captivating lecture: On the Design of Bionic Limbs: The Science of Tissue-Synthetic Interface. Hugh spoke of his journey as an avid mountain climber to working in pioneering bionics research. Read highlights of the private tour and demos, lecture and fireside chat hosted by UCL experts in assistive technology and medical robotics. 🔗 Watch the lecture (password protected) and read more: https://lnkd.in/e5C_zXCF WEISS - Wellcome / EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences UCL Robotics Institute Dimitrios Kanoulas, Dr Victoria Austin, Sophia Bano, He WANG, Amid Ayobi #Bionics #PeterKirstein #AssistiveTech #robotics #MedicalRobotics
