About us
The Wellcome Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomics research. We generate and analyse data at a scale not easily possible elsewhere. We apply and explore genomic technologies to advance the understanding of biology and improve health. Our ambition is vast – we take on projects that are not possible anywhere else. We use the power of genome sequencing to understand and harness the information in DNA. Funded by Wellcome, we have the freedom and support to push the boundaries of genomics. Our findings are used to improve health and to understand life on Earth.

A new genomic technique can track the spread of multiple superbugs in a hospital simultaneously, which could help prevent and manage common infections quicker and more effectively than ever before. 🦠 Compared to current methods that culture and sequence all pathogens separately, this new deep sequencing approach provides high-resolution genomic surveillance data about multiple bacteria all at once, including if they are resistant to antibiotics. 🧬 Using this technique, researchers from the Wellcome Sanger Institute, the University of Oslo, Fondazione IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo in Italy, and collaborators, captured the whole population of pathogenic bacteria found in hospital intensive care units (ICUs) and ordinary wards during the first wave of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. They were able to see the type of bacteria patients had and discovered that each ICU patient involved was colonised by at least one treatment-resistant bacteria, while the majority were colonised by several of them simultaneously. 🧫 Researchers believe their approach could be integrated with existing hospital clinical surveillance systems. As drug resistance is a widespread issue in hospitals and other clinical settings, this system could identify, track and limit the spread of common multiple treatment-resistant bacteria at the same time. 🔬 Read this story in full, here ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/ecHZeC3k

Today is #WorldMosquitoDay. 🦟 On this day in 1897, Sir Ronald Ross discovered that female Anopheles mosquitoes transmit malaria between humans 🩸 There are several thousand species of mosquitoes in the world, but far fewer can transmit diseases like malaria, dengue, and chikungunya. Being able to identify mosquito types is important for public health, as it gives an idea of the risk of diseases that may be circulating in the area. Have you ever wondered how to tell the difference? To learn your three P’s of mosquito identification, check out our in-depth mosquito identification guide created by experts at the Genomic Surveillance Unit (Wellcome Sanger Institute). ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/e54YKVyC
