About us

We are proud to operate two new railway brands for and to the Midlands, the North West and London. In the Midlands the West Midlands Railway brand is a local railway placing Birmingham at the centre of its network. We run the majority of the local services, as well as direct trains to many of the surrounding towns and cities, including Redditch, Stratford-upon-Avon, Worcester, Hereford, Shrewsbury, Telford, and Northampton. Our London Northwestern Railway brand serves the London to Liverpool route on the west coast, stopping at Birmingham, Milton Keynes and Northampton, with the West Midlands at its heart. Both services are operated by West Midlands Trains Ltd, a joint venture between Abellio & Mitsui. Each business brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the franchise and it's our aim to give you the rail experience you deserve at the price you want to pay.

We recently carried out another successful joint revenue operation with partner operators on our network, this time in the Worcester area. Alongside colleagues from Great Western Railway (GWR), we've been working hard to enhance ticket checks, monitor potentially fraudulent behaviour and ultimately crack down on fare evaders on our shared route. During this exercise, which took place across multiple stations, we ... ⚠️ issued 653 penalty fares. 🚨 filed 108 reports for prosecution, for apparent repeat offenders. 📝 noted multiple cases which will be further investigated by our digital fraud team. We work hard to address and reduce fare evasion across the network, supported by the British Transport Police and other train companies. If caught without a ticket, passengers may be liable for a penalty fare of up to £100 + the cost of the ticket, or may face prosecution. To those customers who always purchase a ticket before boarding, thank you. To the small minority who don't, you never know where we might be next.

This morning, Alan Pilbeam, Transport UK’s COO, joined the Ukrainian ambassador to the UK, Valerii Zaluzhnyi and Ukrainian heavyweight champion boxer, Oleksandr Usyk, for the departure of 50+ vehicles transporting critical aid to Ukraine. Transport UK London Bus donated a red bus to lead the four-day, 2,000-mile drive from central London to the city of Kharkiv. 🇺🇦 🇬🇧 The bus is full of much-needed humanitarian aid including food, stretchers, wheelchairs, and medical supplies. Once in Ukraine, the bus will be used to transport people and supplies throughout Kharkiv. 🚍   At Transport UK, we employ a diverse workforce of over 15,000 people, including hundreds of Ukrainian colleagues with relatives still living in Ukraine. We are proud to stand with our Ukrainian colleagues, and the people of Ukraine by giving this bus a new lease of life to help connect communities in the country.     Transport UK is tremendously proud of the drivers who have volunteered to deliver the bus safely to the Ukraine border. The team includes Piotr Slawomir Maslag, Ian Sutton, our engineer Reece, and Ukrainian national Serhiy.   Most of the vehicles have been donated through London’s ULEZ scrappage scheme, alongside donations from businesses and individuals. The ULEZ donation scheme is a partnership with Transport for London and the Peaceful Heaven of Kharkiv / Мирне Небо Харкова, British-Ukrainian Aid, the Swindon Humanitarian Aid Partnership (SHAP) and V-Aid. The charities involved continue to welcome further donations.   #StandWithUkraine #TransportForUkraine

We recently welcomed a group of visually impaired students from the Royal National College for the Blind (RNC) in Hereford, onboard our services as part of their orientation and mobility training programme, to develop skills for independent travel by train.   We worked with the college to structure the session to cover many different elements of a train journey, including route planning, boarding & alighting, familiarity with onboard facilities, as well as the support & information available before, during and after travel.   The event was a success, and we are actively looking at how we can continue to work with the RNC to support students with development initiatives and to gain broader life skills in the future. We are committed to supporting the communities we serve and to ensure travelling by train is increasingly accessible for all. #traveltraining #independence #accessibility #westmidlandsrailway

    • A group of six young people stood on a sheltered railway platform at Hereford station holding train tickets in the air and seeming excited. They are each holding white canes either fully extended or folded and are facing towards a camera in a lineup. The background of the image is of a red brick station building with heritage feature windows and doors, a separate small group of adults sat on a bench and fellow passengers passing by behind the group of young people.

    • Two young females sat next to eachother in adjacent train seats by a window showing a station platform outside, tray tables are folded down in front of them with laptops, hats and other personal items on. They are both looking towards the camera with their hands crossed in front of them and holding mobile phones.

We recently became a White Ribbon UK accredited organisation. This means that we have joined hundreds of other organisations across the country in a commitment to work towards the end of violence against women & girls in society. The accreditation scheme seeks to ensure that organisations take a strategic and joined up approach to work in this field by strengthening systems, through engagement & culture change initiatives as well as raising awareness of the need for change. Our organisational lead for White Ribbon, Cara Higgs said, "we've already met with other accredited organisations to discuss our ideas and I'm really keen to learn more about what we can do and further our work with new partners from diverse sectors over the coming year." On Monday we unveiled proposals to add Manchester to the London Northwestern Railway network, by extending our existing London – Crewe services to Manchester Victoria, as well as our Stafford - Crewe route at both ends to Manchester Airport and Birmingham. Our aim is to provide much needed additional capacity between the capital and twin second cities, as well as to local towns across the West Midlands & Northwest.   Using our state of the art, British built Class 730 electric trains, we would look to run trains with up to 10 carriages, and capacity for 1200 passengers on each service. We’re also keen to work with Network Rail and industry partners to identify the best overall network solutions for improving capacity through some of the busiest parts of the network by aligning with planned upgrades to Manchester Victoria station, the TransPennine route upgrade and wider developments in the Northwest.   Our MD Ian McConnell said, “Our proposal puts passengers at the heart of the railway and is the common sense solution to increase connectivity between the North West and the West Midlands following the cancellation of the northern leg of HS2. With platform space at Euston also at a premium, the best way to provide new journey opportunities is simply to extend existing services, rather than trying to squeeze more trains onto the congested West Coast Main Line. Just as we have shown with our existing long-distance services to Birmingham and Liverpool, our green and environmentally-friendly new electric trains will provide an affordable alternative to the car and coach, with fares up to 50% cheaper than the main intercity operator.” #Connectvity #Rail #Growth #PublicTransport #Manchester #Birmingham

💫 Rail Safety Week #RSW24 Recap 💫 Last week was Rail Safety Week, an industry wide and Rail Forum led initiative focusing on rail safety for all. ⭐ Keeping it Simple to be Safe (KiS). West Midlands Trains launched our new Health, Safety, Security and Environment plan ‘Keeping it simple to be safe’ (KiS). KiS is just your regular annual safety plan in that it will run continuously going forwards. The plan is made up of three core pillars: Keeping it simple to be safe, to be secure, and to be sustainable. Supporting the pillars are several guiding principles that have been designed to ensure all KiS objectives make it easier for us to be more safe, secure, and sustainable in our roles. ⭐ Educating all on safety. Our Community Manager headed out to schools and nurseries across the network. On Thursday, we visited the Humpty Dumpty Nursery & Pre School in Lichfield to talk about all things rail safety. We had a look at equipment used by train crew and a look inside one of the new Class 730s and much more! ⭐️ Working in partnership for passengers. We also joined with British Transport Police and Network Rail at Birmingham Snow Hill station, speaking with passengers about all things safety. 🎇 Everyone who works and travels on our network should feel confident and safe. 🎇
