Thank you TASTE OF THE WEST LIMITED for your support and endorsement. We have been lucky to get recognised in many ways in 2023. But for us this award takes pride of place. This Sustainability Champion award recognises that the whole team at Westaway Sausages Ltd. is determined to make changes to reduce the impact we have on the environment, and also to contribute and invest in the local community and region we love.

Hello Everyone and welcome back to the return of our Meet the Member Feature 👋 Introducing the first of our 2023 Champions and it’s Westaway Sausages Ltd. our Sustainability Champion. Westaway Sausages is a family-owned sausage manufacturer in Newton Abbot, supplying retail, foodservice, and export markets. Over the last 25 years, they have grown from a start-up company to one that leads its sector in innovation & in performance. They produce a wide range of traditional British sausages and have plans to double their production during 2024. Westaway Sausages use completely new packaging materials and designs to replace the plastic packaging on both their fresh and frozen lines. This new packaging is certified compostable EN13432 (Home and Industrial) and has won numerous awards. Charles Baughan MD said “Today sustainability is a prerequisite to business, as is being ethical, inclusive, and working within communities. As consumers look for brands that share their own values this award from Taste of the West will give them reassurance about Westaways and its credentials.” You can check out Westaways on their website here: https://lnkd.in/eMT2g2gM or click on their page to learn more. Westaways Sausages are a member of our Taste of the West community of over 1,000 members who are all passionate about the local food and drink that they produce, serve, or sell. If you would like to enter either our product or hospitality/retail awards or you would like some information about how to join our community as a member, simply drop Lily an email on: ll@tasteofthewest.co.uk. #champion #sustainable #sausages #packaging #innovation #creativity #environmentallyfirendly #ecoalternatives #winner #awards #totwawards #devon #supportlocal #shoplocal #eatlocal #southwest #westcountry

Sometimes the answers lie in plain view. We are a short distance from the Somerset Levels (an area the same size as Isle of Man) of coastal plain and wetland. This great graphic shows just how important this unique area is. #soil #carboncapture #miscanthus #reed #biodiversity #habitat

It's really worth spending a few minutes on this infographic to understand the incredible impact of #soil as a #carbon sink. We tend to focus on the #ocean and #trees but soil contains almost 2x as much carbon as the atmosphere, living flora and animals combined! The challenge is protecting and preserving soil which is depleted through deforestation, fires and over-production. Sources: IPCC & NASA

We have shown the art of the possible from black plastic tray to clear plastic, to pulp, to FSC card, to local plant fibre. From plastic bag to dual purpose potato starch bag. We have provided a 22% more space efficient way of storing and distributing temperature controlled products. We are developing paths that others can turn into motorways.

I doubt anyone would be invited to speak about sustainability 4 years ago. But today it is a prerequisite to business, as is being ethical, inclusive and working within communities. It was a great privilege to share our journey at Westaway Sausages Ltd. with the fantastic audience at the Devon Tourism Awards last night. It is not about a few being perfect, it is about us all making changes. Visit Devon South West Tourism Awards
