WheelPower - British Wheelchair Sport 2024 events programme continues… On Thursday 7 November, we will be hosting our next inclusive sports event for anyone with a #physicaldisability at the Aspire Leisure Centre, Stanmore. This is a fun ‘have a go’ day, supported by experienced coaches and all the equipment for five different wheelchair based sports participants can try. This isn’t about talent spotting or pathways; this is about enabling wheelchair users of all ages being able to bypass the barriers faced to sports. Know anyone who might like to come along? We have a few places left https://lnkd.in/erQrHVt7 #wheelpower #disabilitySport #ActivityAndInclusion

Transforming Lives Through Movement, Activity and Sport
About us
Each year many thousands of men, women and children become disabled due to an accident or illness. WheelPower is the national charity for wheelchair sport and helps these people and many others with disabilities to achieve their sporting dreams. WheelPower provides accessible and inclusive facilities at Stoke Mandeville Stadium, the home of British Wheelchair Sport and birthplace of the Paralympic Movement. Our facilities include an Athletics Arena, Sports Hall, Swimming Pool and Fitness Centre. On site accommodation in the Olympic Lodge and Olympic Village is suitable for a wide range of disabilities and is complemented by meeting and conference facilities and catering facilities for events of all sizes. Transforming Lives Through Sport Each year WheelPower organises a range of events for young and newly disabled people. Whether it is one of our Feel Inspired Primary or Junior Sports Camps or the National Junior Games we give disablled children aged 5-18 years the chance to find a sport they love and increase their confidence and skills. We provide newly paralysed men and women from around the UK with an opportunity to access sport and physical activity and our annual Inter Spinal Unit Games support people within one year of their spinal injury. Sport has the power to transform lives and we support a number of Peer Mentor Physical Activity Advisors within spinal injury centres around the country who support the rehabilitation of patients. Our facilities at Stoke Mandeville Stadium are visited by 50,000 disabled people each year who enjoy the chance to enjoy being active as part of a healthy life.

This donation will provide opportunities for disabled people to lead active lives - thank you for your support The Chiltern Brewery
WheelPower - the national charity for wheelchair sport. We were delighted to visit WheelPower's HQ at Stoke Mandeville Stadium this month. We met Eve Helyer and Chris Rattenbury, to donate £300, a fantastic amount, raised with your help. Just a few miles from the Brewery, the Stadium is the birthplace of the Paralympic Movement, and WheelPower is at the heart of wheelchair sport. Tom Jenkinson says "It's always a pleasure to work with WheelPower and to see the amazing work they do in transforming lives of disabled people". The National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital was founded by Sir Ludwig “Poppa” Guttmann in 1944. He believed that sport was an essential part of the rehabilitation programme of his patients, using it to help build physical strength and self-respect. A snap shot of his life and story is depicted in the 2012 film ‘The Best of Men’ WheelPower and Stoke Mandeville Stadium have grown through his inspiration and passion and remain the spiritual home of the Paralympics to this day. It is humbling to visit WheelPower and the Stadium, and see how busy it is and the extent and range of sport, help and support WheelPower provide. In this inspiring Olympic and Paralympic year it has been a great chance to raise awareness in support of this worthy charity and the owners of Stoke Mandeville Stadium. It is a pleasure partnering with the WheelPower team, even in our small way. Thank you for your support; we can see how valuable it is and we look forward to continuing to support WheelPower (https://lnkd.in/evpw_bq).

Two British sporting legends were inducted into the WheelPower Stoke Mandeville Hall of Fame during the Inter Spinal Unit Games, which is held every year at Stoke Mandeville Stadium to promote a healthy and active lifestyle through sport for people who had recently experienced a spinal injury. The two inductees were wheelchair basketball player Terry Bywater and wheelchair curler Angie Malone MBE. They join a small group of elite British Paralympians and Sports Administrators with a unique connection to the Stadium, the birthplace of the Paralympic Movement and the charity WheelPower.

Around seven years ago, I was asked to spend some time with 'Ben' who was receiving treatment for spinal cord injury (SCI) at Stoke Mandeville’s Spinal Injuries Unit. It’s a place I know very well from my own experience of SCI spanning more than 25 years. Back then I was working for WheelPower - British Wheelchair Sport as a Physical Activity Advisor, embedded in the The National Spinal Injuries Centre one day a week. A fantastic role I very much miss, that is still thriving today. Ben was super keen from the moment we met. Every session we had, I made a point of pushing him further and further. We’re not talking sport here, we’re talking wheelchair skills. The basics plus maybe some 'what's possible' conversations – peer to peer mentoring, I suppose. It’s the start of the long mental and physical journey you face when you’re coming to terms with a life-changing set of circumstances. Fast forward to earlier this month and I find myself watching Benjamin Pritchard – the ‘Ben’ I met – win Gold 🏅 in the PR1 Men’s Single Sculls at the Paralympic Games. Amazing, it really is. It made me pause, celebrate for Ben and hope that (maybe) what I was able to share all those years ago helped him on his journey in some small way. I was in Paris for work during the games, and Ben’s Gold was a lovely moment to round up what’s been a really amazing 10 days... #Paris2024 #Sports #Rowing #NeverGiveUp

The event provided everyone with an opportunity to try a range of different wheelchair sports, hear from a Paralympian and find out more about WheelPower and the people we support.
