It’s great to see this new video from Ballymore which demonstrates Royal Wharf in London as a thriving new town, designed with great architecture and strong placemaking principles. Its remarkable to consider that a diverse community of 10,000 people live here now; I remember seeing it as an industrial wasteland in 2014, before construction started. Whittam Cox Architects were delighted to play our part in delivering the majority of buildings and homes here as Executive Architects, employing modern methods of design and construction. Over a total period of 8 years, we collaborated with a range of construction and professional partners, including Howells and Byldis. Evidently this model can be used effectively to respond to the current under supply of new homes and we’re very proud to be delivering other projects around the country like this today…

Ambitious homebuilding targets have been set for London and the UK. In order to deliver 1.5m homes over the next five years, the private and public sector must work in close partnership to plan, design and build at pace and at scale.    At Royal Wharf in the Royal Docks, in just six years Ballymore has delivered a new town with some 4,500 homes, a new high street, healthcare facilities, parks, a primary school and nursery, community centre and workspace, as well as a new pier for Thames Clippers.    Our web article takes a closer look at Royal Wharf, now an established community, and what lessons can be learnt from this extraordinary development project: https://lnkd.in/eM8pnPgv

We attended the Bisnow - UK Hotel Outlook today, where discussions included the evolving hotel market and how changes in traveller behaviour are reshaping design. A key takeaway was the focus on locality and the importance of hotels reflecting the unique character of their surroundings. As designers, we’re passionate about evolving brands to create interiors that resonate with local culture, while repurposing spaces to add real value. The shift toward flexible, multifunctional environments and personalised guest experiences is something we actively incorporate to drive innovation across the hospitality sector for our clients. We were fortunate to conclude the day with a tour of the stunning Park Hyatt London, a true example of how thoughtful design can enhance the guest experience and transform a hotel to a destination. #WhittamCoxArchitects #InteriorDesign #UKHotels #HospitalityTrends #LocalityAndDesign #RepurposingSpaces

Celebrating World Architecture Day 2024: Shaping Tomorrow. This year’s theme, Empowering the Next Generation to Participate in Urban Design, has us reflecting on the future of architecture and how it’s being shaped by young voices like Monika Watras, a newly qualified architect on our retail team. Monika is leading the way with her passion for sustainable and inclusive architecture. From embedding durability and eco-friendly practices into design to revitalising existing structures, her approach reflects a commitment to creating spaces that benefit both people and the planet. “Architecture is more than aesthetics—it's about fostering well-being, reducing environmental impact, and ensuring inclusivity for all. Snapshots from Property Week’s #RESi360 Conference over the last two days… In addition to our Sheffield regional panel yesterday, today our Associate Director Peter Darby delivered an excellent Case Study overview of Moda Hove, focussing on designing places for people. There have been some really insightful and entertaining panel sessions today. It’s been wonderful to see so many connections and friends; and have the opportunity to have proper conversations. We were proud to be Partners of this event, as well as being on the advisory board. Whittam Cox Architects / #ProgressiveByDesign

Kicking off the second day of #RESI360 with some powerful insights. Perer Freemen of Homes England set the tone: “We all have our part to play.” In developing new quality homes: Passion and purpose are essential to provide the security people need to build their lives. Rebecca Egan from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government shared an ambitious plan: Commiting to planning reform, new generational towns, and the biggest increase in social and affordable housing in decades. Priorities are clear – pace, quality, and the benefits of Modern Methods of Construction (MMC). Iain Murray from Bidwells addressed the significant fall in planning applications in 2024 and the impact of high interest rates on viability. However, Build-to-Rent (BTR) is seeing strong growth across the UK, driving economic uplift in local areas. The call now is for government support to unlock capital funding and secure the pipeline. A clear call to action for the industry to drive forward! #Housing #Construction #AffordableHomes #BuildToRent

It was great to chair a ‘Sheffield’ panel session this morning at Property Week’s #RESi360 event. Huge thanks to… - Sean McClean / Sheffield City Council - Clare Plant / nineteen47 Ltd. - Mark Curtis Edwards / Capital&Centric - John Clephan / Citu They all shared informed and insightful perspectives, discussing the changing development landscape in Sheffield, and how it’s strategically driving growth in delivering more Homes. We also talked honestly about viability, planning and inflation, and how these are being addressed through proper collaborative partnerships. Close connectivity to Homes England has supported the ambition and outcomes, and continues to do so. Sheffield Property Association has also played an important part in promoting and challenging key outcomes. Sheffield is an authentic City which has compelling cultural capital; this is being continuously fused into the approach to development and placemaking. There are many reasons to be positive about Sheffield. It was great to share some of this, hopefully this momentum can continue… Whittam Cox Architects / #ProgressiveByDesign
