Our Farm’s Bokashi Bran: The Easiest Way to Start Composting At Lower Blakemere, we’re here to help make composting simple, even if you’re completely new to it. One of the easiest ways to dive in is with Bokashi. Unlike traditional composting, Bokashi can handle all kitchen waste—including trickier items like meat, dairy, and cooked leftovers. If you’re looking for a low-maintenance method that can process larger amounts or an occasional glut of waste, Bokashi is an ideal starting point. Our Bokashi Bran is made right here on the farm, blending wheat bran, molasses, water, and a mix of effective microorganisms (EM1) that help speed up the breakdown process. We prepare it in large batches, ferment it, dry it on our grain store floor, and pack it into 1kg, 3kg, and 5kg bags—so whether you’re handling daily food scraps or a large batch, we’ve got you covered. Using Bokashi Bran is as easy as sprinkling a small amount onto your food waste in a Bokashi bin. The microorganisms quickly go to work, fermenting your scraps and locking in nutrients. In just a couple of weeks, you’ll have a nutrient-rich “pre-compost” that you can add directly to your garden soil or another compost heap, enriching it with beneficial bacteria and nutrients.
