Researchers from Tohoku University of Community Service and Science and MIT have developed an AI tool that can predict how materials interact with light just by analysing their crystal structure. This breakthrough could speed up the process of discovering new materials for things like solar cells, LEDs, and other light-based technologies. The AI uses a method called ensemble embedding, which combines several models to boost accuracy, allowing for faster and more efficient material screening. Ideal for identifying high-performance materials, including quantum materials. Looking ahead, the team aims to expand the AI's abilities to predict other properties, such as mechanical and magnetic characteristics. A new sustainable method for recycling valuable metals from e-waste has been developed at Rice University. Led by Professor James Tour, the process uses flash Joule heating to efficiently recover metals like gallium, indium, and tantalum, without producing harmful waste or requiring high energy use. This innovation reduces both costs and environmental impact while achieving over 95% metal purity. The team is working to adapt the technique for other critical metals, helping to solve global shortages. A new low-cost paper sensor has been developed to detect disease biomarkers in wastewater using a mobile phone camera. Created by Cranfield University, this quick and portable test has the potential to change how infectious diseases are tracked, offering a more affordable option compared to traditional PCR testing. The method was proven effective during COVID-19, providing rapid results for community infection rates. The simple test costs just £1 and could help predict disease outbreaks, enhancing public health responses during future pandemics. Researchers in Australia have come up with a more eco-friendly way to produce ammonia, using liquid metal to cut down on energy and carbon emissions. Developed by PPIA RMIT University, this new method uses 20% less heat and 98% less pressure compared to the traditional Haber-Bosch process. It also relies on cheaper and more widely available materials like copper and gallium, making it a much more sustainable option. Ammonia is crucial for fertilisers and hydrogen transport, and this process could significantly cut global emissions from its production. The team hopes to test this technology in the real world soon. National Highways is testing a new graphene-enhanced asphalt, as used at the famous Imola F1 circuit in Italy. The material, Gipave, includes 40% reclaimed asphalt, making it the first UK trial of its kind. By strengthening the asphalt, it’s expected to extend road life and reduce carbon emissions. This trial is part of National Highways' push to reach net zero by 2040. Tests are taking place on the A12 in Essex and if it works as planned, it could transform the future of UK roads - potentially providing an end to the troublesome potholes!
