You might have heard us talking about lead ammunition a lot lately. But how did we get here? Why in 2025, is 7,000 tonnes of lead ammunition still being scattered across the environment each year? At this critical moment for wildlife and communities, we wanted to tell this story through the people at WWT who’ve been fighting for wetlands and wildlife every step of the way. 👉 https://lnkd.in/edXJADpQ #Conservation #Wetlands

Saltmarshes might look quiet at first glance. 🔍 But they’re nature-boosting ecosystems full of hidden wonder. 🐛 From the worms, shellfish and bugs in every cubic metre that match the calorie content of 16 mars bars, to the waders, geese and other waterbirds that call them home. Saltmarshes are a bird watchers paradise. What does it take to end poisoning caused by lead ammunition? ❌ Five years ago, shooting organisations called for a voluntary ban on the use of toxic lead ammunition. Researchers have been monitoring whether this ban has worked to limit the use of lead ammunition, but the results tell us it’s not working. 7,000 tonnes of lead ammunition are scattered across our environment each year, poisoning people, wildlife and wetlands. But we have the chance to stop it. Time is ticking. 🕙 You can help us ban the use of lead ammunition by taking action here: https://lnkd.in/e25fxdcm #Wetlands #Nature #Wildlife #Conservation

Where are the Bewick’s swans? 🦢 This winter saw the lowest numbers of Bewick’s swans in the Britain with none spotted in Ireland. Early figures suggest Britain has lost up to 43% of its population of Bewick’s swans in just five years. What’s causing this? Rising global temperatures causing short-stopping on their 3,500km migration routes, changing weather conditions due to climate change impacting the habitats they rely on, and facing dangers on their migration from lead poisoning and illegal shooting. But there's a solution, and it lies where land meets water. Wetlands are vital carbon-storing, flood-busting, nature-bursting habitats for waterbirds like Bewick's swans, that's why we're on a mission to restore them and unlock their superpowers. Meet our new colleagues 🪵🦫 For the first time in centuries, the release of beavers will be allowed in UK waterways, the government announced today. They’re natural creators of wetland habitats, using their ever-growing teeth to help restore and manage them, while reducing flooding and drought. Their natural landscaping can also help boost populations of other wildlife in the areas they live. #Reintroduction #Beavers #GoodNews #Wetlands

What do cows have to do with saltmarsh restoration? 🐄 Saltmarshes are flood-busting, nature-bursting, carbon-storing and mood-boosting ecosystems. But did you know they can also be used as grazing grounds for cattle? Grazing stimulates root growth and encourages saltmarsh plants like samphire and sea aster to thrive, which helps draw carbon into the soil. 🌱 How do farmers keep the cattle safe? At WWT Steart Marshes, local farmer Andy Darch uses innovative ‘NoFence’ GPS collars that play Waltzing Matilda to guide cattle away from muddy ditches and rising rides. 🎶 It’s a unique approach that benefits both the livestock and the land. Want to learn more about how WWT Steart Marshes is transforming local connections to the land? 👉 Read our latest blog https://lnkd.in/epFVYbcM #RestoringSaltmarsh #SaltmarshPotential #Saltmarsh #Wetlands
