Three of our landmark London projects – Battersea Power Station, 40 Leadenhall and Maggie’s Cancer Centre at the Royal Free Hospital – are in the running for the Global Tekla BIM Awards 🏆 The Awards celebrate the worldwide use of Trimble Tekla UK BIM software to create innovative, iconic buildings. For Battersea Power Station, we used Tekla Structures to design and supply almost 24,000 tonnes of steel, including one 27m beam that weighed in at 62 tonnes. For 40 Leadenhall, we created a 34-storey steel frame superstructure for the building, maximising the use of Trimble software for collaboration with our partners on the project. Tekla Structures and Trimble Connect enabled us to create the challenging geometry of Maggie's Centres Cancer Centre at the Royal Free Hospital. The Awards are decided by public vote and your support would be fantastic! You can view all the entries and vote here: https://lnkd.in/dyjanUJ The vote closes on 30th September – many thanks for your support. #GlobalTeklaAwards #BIM #steel #StructuralSteel #GetVoting!

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day – an event run by the World Health Organization to change the narrative on suicide. At William Hare, we are determined to do all we can to address this issue, which as the figures below show is a major concern for our industry. We have been working in partnership with Mates in Mind – an organisation dedicated to improving positive mental wellbeing in the UK – to encourage colleagues to break the stigma surrounding mental health. All colleagues have access to a wellbeing app that provides links to counselling and other resources to support positive mental health. In addition, the business has run suicide awareness programmes for managers and has 20 Suicide First Aiders – colleagues from across offices, construction sites and production facilities, from shop floor right up to management. All have been trained to have the understanding and confidence to intervene with people at risk of suicide. It’s time we all start the conversation about mental health. And remember, if you find it hard to talk to people you know about your mental health: 📞 Call your GP and ask for an emergency appointment 📞 Call 111 out of hours – they will help you find the support and help you need 📞 Contact your mental health crisis team (if you have one) 📞 Call a confidential helpline, like the Samaritans, Mind's Infoline, Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide, or Mates in Mind. #WorldSuicidePreventionDay #MentalHealth #construction #OurPeople

As the Paris Olympics and Paralympics draw to a close, we’re looking back at the part we played in converting the London Stadium for long-term use after the 2012 Olympic Games. To prepare the stadium for football and athletics, we provided the structural steel for the largest spanning tensile roof in the world. The roof weighs in at around 4,700 tonnes – nearly six times the weight of its predecessor! In total, we provided: ➡️ 8km of steel cables weighing 930 tonnes ➡️ 112 steel rafters ➡️ 238 purlins ➡️ 422 struts ➡️ 9,900 roof panels ➡️ 14 light paddles each weighing 43 tonnes So, next time you’re watching a sporting event in the stadium, take time to look at the astonishing roof! To mark World Skyscraper Day, we’re celebrating some of the incredible buildings in London that we’ve helped to shape with structural steel. The availability of high-quality steel from the mid-1800s revolutionised construction, providing the flexibility and strength that architects needed to design taller. The world’s first skyscraper, The Home Insurance Building in Chicago, used a steel skeleton structure. Today, steel continues to provide the central support for skyscrapers worldwide. As a team that loves complex, challenging projects, we collaborate closely with developers globally to maximise the use of our structural steel to shape city skylines. Happy World Skyscraper Day from all at William Hare! 🏙️ #skyscraper #architecture #StructuralSteel

Huge congratulations to our colleagues in Scarborough, who raised an amazing £2,778 at their football family fun day! The community turned out in force for our ‘Have fun for Harlee and Candlelighters’ day. Colleagues, family and friends were treated to a charity football match, bouncy castle, zorbing, a penalty shootout, a raffle and face painting. All proceeds raised will go to a Candlelighters fund set up to support Harlee Breckon, a local girl with leukaemia, who enjoyed the big day with a smile on her face! Thanks to our colleague Stacey Porter for organising the day, to Harlee and her mum Lisa, and to everyone who donated time and prizes to make the event such a success. #community #fundraising #OurPeople

With sustainability at the forefront of all we do at William Hare, we are looking forward to a trio of important events for our industry next month. Firstly, we are pleased to be a Gold Sponsor of Circular Steel 2024, which will take place in Aldgate, London on 10 September. This annual event brings together experts and thought leaders from across our sector to focus on creating a more circular steel industry. Attendees will have the opportunity to take part in panel sessions, as well as enjoying presentations, interactive case studies and networking opportunities. Then on the following day, our team will be at AJ Retrofit Live at The Brewery in London for an in-depth exploration of steel reuse, sharing expert insights and fostering industry collaboration. The session will be facilitated by four leaders in the field: our Associate Technical Director Jonathan Davis; Scott de la Fuente from Keltbray; Ian Poole from Elliott Wood; and Robert Palmer from EMR. Finally, on 11–12 September the metals industry will be gathering at UK Metals Expo - The Leading Event for the Entire Metals Supply Chain at the NEC in Birmingham to discuss major initiatives, challenges and successes. Jonathan Davis has been invited to speak on the second day of the event, sharing his insights into advancing structural steelwork reuse along with panellists from The University of Sheffield, BCSA - British Constructional Steelwork Association, Cleveland Steel & Tubes Ltd, and Deconstruct (UK) Ltd. It was great to open our doors to a group of students earlier in the summer and give them an insight into 'A Day in the Life of William Hare’. The students were from Lakes College in Cumbria, which has close links to the Sellafield site where our team has been working for over 30 years. The aim of the day was to provide an insight into the construction and structural steel industry, with a particular focus on our own early careers programme and the opportunities it provides. Highlights included: ➡️ Presentations on the company’s history and projects delivered ➡️ Insights into engineering, quality and commercial roles ➡️ Inputs from civil engineering, quantity surveying and fabricator/welder apprentices ➡️ A tour of our Bury manufacturing facility ➡️ A visit to the Manchester City FC construction site, where William Hare is contributing to the stadium’s expansion The event was a resounding success, with students rating it 5/5 in a feedback survey! Thanks to all our colleagues who gave their time to support the initiative. #EarlyCareers #apprenticeships #StructuralSteel #construction #community

Our work at 1 Liverpool Street in the City of London to provide the structural steel for a commercial development over the underground station is moving ahead at pace. In total, William Hare is providing 4,000 tonnes of steel, including a series of nine 4.5m-deep trusses, positioned at first floor level, that create a large bridge over the assets and support the columns for the upper floors of the office block. To overcome the challenge of manoeuvring large loads on a site surrounded by busy London roads, the trusses are delivered in sections and either assembled on the ground then lifted into place or installed in sections from bottom up. As steelwork is being erected directly over live railway infrastructure, some of the work has to be scheduled overnight. This has included the installation of a series of plate girders measuring over 15m, which form the floor of the lowest basement level of the building and create a deck allowing work to proceed over the railway lines. The latest issue of NSC magazine includes a great feature on the technical challenges of the project. Turn to page 24 to read more: https://lnkd.in/gANHk6N Huge thanks to our fantastic team who continue to play such an important role in shaping the city, and to our great partners on this project: ➡️ Eric Parry Architects, architect ➡️ Mace, main contractor ➡️ Robert Bird Group, structural engineer #London #structuralsteel #steel
