Capping off a great week with #OpenDoors25! A wonderful way to showcase our industry to so many people, to show the fantastic work we do through the brilliant people who choose to literally build a career in construction. Well done to Build UK for putting this together, and all the Willmott Dixon teams who’ve hosted so many visits and shone a light on what a great place our industry is to work in. We’re very proud of what we create as an industry, and Open Doors is bringing that to life through the stories of our people.

  • Our chief people officer Rick Lee spoke at a major parliamentary event focused on workplace support for women’s health and reproductive health. Rick talked about two areas that our company has focused on – menopause and bereavement leave for pregnancy and baby loss. That includes signing up to the Menopause Workplace Pledge and, as well as full access to occupational health services, we pay for the cost of a BUPA menopause health screening for our people. As a member of the Women’s Business Council, Rick also shared his thoughts about the importance of male allies of change, as part of our aspiration to achieve gender parity across all management levels by 2030. Thank you to the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development and Society of Occupational Medicines for letting Rick share our story to a very distinguished group of people.

  • We celebrated the launch of the cutting-edge £32m Gateway One digital tech hub development alongside Doncaster Council and Business Doncaster.   Procured via SCAPE, Gateway One will support the town's ambition to grow a digital and tech cluster of national significance. The project will be sustainably designed to achieve net zero carbon emissions and will also include an area of public open space.   Ahead of work starting on site, guests took a tour inside the building through VR headsets.   Gateway One will be a catalyst for creating opportunities for the people of Doncaster. Alongside our local supply chain partners, we are committed to creating six new employment opportunities directly on the project. Through our bespoke ‘Building Lives Academy’ initiatives in collaboration with Advance Employment Hub, we also aim to deliver more than 650 hours of impactful employment support for local people furthest from the job market, those at risk of redundancy and those looking to transition into the construction industry.   Read more: https://lnkd.in/ez3i-tZu

It was a pleasure to welcome Avon & Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership and #ProCure23 (P23) framework recently to our Bristol project The Kingfisher, a specialist mental health inpatient service for adults across the south west with learning disabilities and autistic people. Guests heard presentations from both AWP and our site team who gave an insight on The Kingfisher, from its concepts, clinical needs and design through to a construction update. This was followed by a tour of the project. We are working with Ryder Architecture and Hydrock, now Stantec on this project, which is part of a southwest regional programme to improve the quality of care and experience for adults with a learning disability and autistic people. It will provide ten new specialist inpatient bedrooms and supporting facilities, enabling much needed care closer to home.

  • Continuing our series marking International Women’s Day and Women in Construction Week, we hear from Scarlett Salt, a project manager & sustainability lead at William Haley Engineering, about forging a career in construction. Tell us about your journey into construction? My journey into construction is an unconventional one! Before joining William Haley Engineering, I had no experience in construction but after 12 years as a primary school teacher, I wanted a change in direction. From a busy and challenging career in education, I knew I had the people and organisational skills to project manage. I applied for the role at William Haley Engineering and am learning every day. I am well supported in my role, which allows me to learn the vast number of skills and technical information I need to equip me as a fully independent project manager. What do you enjoy most about working in construction? What I enjoy most about the role of project management in the construction industry is the client-facing part of my role. I can put my communication skills into practice, and I enjoy forming relationships and contributing to whole-team success. I also love going to site to see the progress of the jobs I am managing and to learn first-hand how things work or why things didn’t work in that instance. What are the biggest challenges in encouraging more women into trade roles? The biggest challenges include how to present these sorts of roles as exciting and engaging to women and how to ensure the industry doesn’t feel antiquated and unwelcoming towards women. How can the industry better support and attract women into a trade role? I think the key to encouraging women into roles across the supply chain is to inspire girls from a young age into STEM related subjects. I also think an important factor is to make the wide range of roles available in the construction industry clearer from the outset. I think some women still see construction as male-orientated, even though there are a vast number of different roles, requiring different skills.
