At yesterday's Winmark PensionChair lunch, Helen Miles, Chair of the NHS Pension Scheme, led our roundtable discussion on the Chairs role in ensuring gold standard trustee meetings and shared some great ideas. We had fantastic input from Jenny Gibbons and Gowri Kotur from WTW on how you can go about being intentional and directive while also responding to the people and circumstances in front of you. This opened up a great discussion with those around the table on topics including inclusion, dealing with divisive issues, and managing dominant voices. Thank you to all who shared and to Merle Russell for excellent hosting! At the next Winmark PensionChair lunch on Monday 17th March, Helen Miles, Chair of the NHS Pension Scheme, will be chairing a roundtable discussion to help ensure there is a common understanding of the role of the Chair and how to deliver on that role effectively as higher levels of sophistication and standards are expected from stakeholders including the Pensions Regulator. We will be focusing on running meetings effectively, how to structure 'gold standard' meetings, how you manage in the moment as well as between meetings and balancing strategic and operational priorities. We will also be looking at board dynamics and building an open and inclusive environment to help get the best out of all trustees around the table. It will be an opportunity for chairs to share specific challenges and failures and we will be hearing some lessons learned from board effectiveness reviews conducted by Jenny Gibbons at WTW who will be highlighting potential blind spots. This will help set the scene for exploring potential nightmare scenarios where chairs are under the spotlight (and not in a good way!). As we gear up for Q2, we want to reflect on last week’s private member dinner with Manju Malhotra, a profound celebration of Women in Leadership, punctuated by the enlightening discussion on “What I Wish I Knew Before I Became a CEO.” Here are two key takeaways that resonated within the community to focus on: 1) Agility in Leadership: Manju shared her personal experiences, highlighting how essential it is for leaders to remain agile. By being open to new ideas and embracing change, we can spark innovation and foster stronger team dynamics. She encouraged all of us to embrace our unique paths and not shy away from sharing our journeys—complete with challenges and triumphs. This honest exchange not only builds our character but strengthens our leadership capabilities. 2) The Power of Mentorship and Sponsorship: One of the most powerful themes of the evening was the importance of mentorship for women in leadership roles. Manju discussed the distinct challenges women often face, emphasising the need for resilience and reframing obstacles as opportunities for personal growth. This important perspective is not just for women; it’s a critical lesson for all leaders committed to developing strength and inclusivity in their teams. Winmark wants to continue to cultivate an environment where women in leadership can thrive and we invite you all to reflect on these insights. How can we collectively implement these principles in our practices? Your thoughts and input are invaluable as we continue this important conversation. #InternationalWomensDay #WomeninLeadership #CSuite #LearningOpportunity #CEO

Redefining an industry takes courage—especially when it means challenging the status quo. Whitney Wolfe Herd didn’t just build a business; she reshaped the way people connect. Her journey is proof that innovation, resilience, and a bold vision can drive meaningful change. Ahead of this International Women’s Day, Winmark wants to highlight self-made women billionaires who have changed industries with their vision and resilience. Whitney Wolfe Herd is the founder of Bumble, the dating app that put women in control and disrupted an entire industry. After co-founding Tinder, she set out to create a platform that prioritised respect and empowerment. Despite facing challenges as a young female entrepreneur in tech, she led Bumble to a billion-dollar IPO, becoming the youngest self-made woman to take a company public. With International Women’s Day just around the corner, we invite you to take this opportunity to celebrate women in leadership, tech, and business. Tomorrow is not just a day of recognition—it’s a reminder of the progress made, the challenges still ahead, and the role we all play in shaping a more inclusive future. May we all be inspired to support and uplift the next generation of female leaders, today and every day. #WomensDay #WomenInLeadership #SelfMadebillionaires #Inspiration

Women in Leadership positions has long been acknowledged as paramount to the executive committee and its direct reports in shaping an inclusive culture and strategy within an organisation, and role modelling diverse leadership. The FTSE 100 is within reach of the 40% target at 36.6% and for the business-led framework to be a long-term success, all companies need to challenge existing mindsets and practices, and play their part. Last night, Winmark was privileged to work with Natasha Makhijani and Oliver Sanderson Group PLC in delivering a private members dinner, at Michelin Star Restaurant, Kanishka by Atul in Mayfair. The purpose of the evening was to both celebrate and learn from experienced female C-Suite leaders, on the challenges they have overcome and more specifically, what they wish they knew before becoming a CEO. We were lucky to be joined by Manju Malhotra, Former COO, CFO, and finally, CEO of Harvey Nichols Plc. Manju was shortlisted as an “NED to watch” in the Sunday Times non-executive Director awards and was featured in the Retail Week 100 and Draper’s Power 100 lists. Last night’s dinner was a wonderful chance for both male and female leaders to unite, share experiences, and enrich our understanding of leadership dynamics in today’s world and thank you to our attendees who did such a wonderful job at doing this: Aaisha Knights - Ihediwa, Chris Southgate, Anouschka Elliott, Phillip Wale, Kelly Beaver MBE, Emmanuelle Ries, Vijay K., Bola Oladimeji, Henritetta Royle, Nazneen Rahman, Maana Ruia, Sanjive Sachdev, John Jeffcock, Doris Suchet, Donell Waysome, Fred Britton

Breaking into an industry where few women have ventured is never easy—especially when that industry is biotechnology. But challenges didn’t stop Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw. With a bold vision and unwavering determination, she built a company that revolutionised healthcare and made lifesaving treatments more accessible worldwide. Ahead of this International Women’s Day, Winmark wants to highlight self-made women billionaires who have changed industries with their vision and resilience. Kiran Mazumdar Shaw is the founder of Biocon, one of India’s leading biotechnology firms specialising in affordable and innovative healthcare solutions. She started the company in a small garage with limited funding, facing scepticism in a male-dominated industry. Today, Biocon is a global pharmaceutical powerhouse, and Kiran is one of the most influential women in STEM. Her journey highlights the power of perseverance, scientific innovation, and the impact of purpose-driven leadership.
