Today we say goodbye and thanks to Nigel Marland MCIAT who started off his working career as a whippersnapper technician in Cooke & Arkwright in Bangor in the late 70s, to a spell with Gwynedd Council before a long career with Gwynedd Health Authority in Caernarfon and Llanfairfechan. Then branching out as one of the founders of WM Design & Architecture in 2003, for the last 22 years based in Menai Bridge and latterly in our office M-Sparc in Gaerwen, it’s high time to get out of the industry…."his words" From all at WM Design & Architecture, M-Sparc, family and friends, farewell and have a happy retirement, or more time to spend on the Pier, gardening, trips away, DIY etc. etc.

Interesting site visit to St David’s Church on Caernarfon Road in Bangor, Grade II Listed built in 1888 by the London based Sir Arthur Blomfield. Built in an early English Gothic revivalist style, it was intended as a memorial church to Dean Edwards under the benefaction of Elizabeth Atcherley Symes of Gorphwysfa and initially intended as a church for the railway community, it cost £8,000 (just over £1m in today’s money). The church closed in 2013 due to a falling congregation and increased running costs. The interior of the building is described in Pevsner (2009) as “one of the best of its era in North Wales. Sadly a lot of the interior decoration & fixtures were removed in 2023. Some essential maintenance work is required to the roofs where lead & metalwork has been removed, damp ingress in some areas that can be addressed, interesting use of concrete in the floors & basement. It will be interesting to see what’s feasible with the building & site. Some interesting& unusual covenant clauses. #churches #heritagerestoration #conservation

Early morning visit to this 1800’s ex water driven floor mill near Llansannan in Denbighshire, originally fed by a leat fed off Afon Aled, the mill has gone through various restoration’s & transformations not all good & some of the original machinery lost….! Wheel produced by J&R Thomas in Llanrwst….how they got it to site must have been a major undertaking, steep narrow lanes. Clients looking to sensitively restore some sections and remove some of then unusual subdivision & open up the main spaces. #mills #watermills #heritagerestoration #cymru #hanes

Return visit to a 2008 project, looking a little tired an battered in some places after the recent storms, interior though still looking crisp. Project due for a spruce up in 2025 #limekiln #ynysmôn

Delighted to have been able to get this planning consent through for a replacement dwelling based on the original form with a wraparound living space overlooking Traeth Trearddur. Thanks to @LandStudio for their input into the visual appraisal work on both the daytime and nighttime impacts.
