Ten years ago today, Claire’s eldest son, Jack, died from the injuries he sustained from a fire deliberately set by her abusive ex-husband during an unsupervised visit mandated by the family courts. Just five days earlier, Jack’s younger brother, Paul, was tragically killed in the same fire—even after Jack’s heroic attempt to save him from the flames. A decade later, Claire is still pushing for change. This month, her petition reached 100,000 signatures—a huge milestone in the push to make family courts safer for women and children. Yesterday, Claire held a vigil for her sons, Jack and Paul, who were killed by their father ten years ago this week. The local community gathered in support, writing messages of love on paper hearts and lighting candles. There were short speeches from Councillor Dave Leech (the deputy mayor of Barnsley) who said 'never again' when it comes to deaths like Jack and Paul's. Women's Aid and IDAS reflected on how the boys would have been so proud of Claire and that she was an incredible advocate for other survivors. The three speakers paid tribute to Jack and Paul, and to Claire's tireless and incredible campaigning to change the family courts for other survivors. Claire spoke very movingly about her boys and the need to #ShineALight on the tragic and preventable deaths of all children killed by perpetrators during child contact. After two minutes silence, Claire asked the group to sing Somewhere Over the Rainbow with her, the song she used to sing to Jack and Paul when they were scared. It was a powerful moment. We cannot stand by and allow another mother to experience the pain that Claire has been through, and we must see urgent change in the family courts to make it happen.

Today, a second wave of prisoners are being released as part of the Early Release Scheme. While we recognise the need for action to address the serious issue of overcrowding in prisons, Women’s Aid is once again warning about the consequences this will have for survivors of domestic abuse and other forms of violence against women and girls.
