About us
Women Empowering Defence: Redefining Strength, Diversity, and Leadership. Women Empowering Defence is more than an initiative—it's a transformative movement reshaping the future of the defence sector. In a world where gender roles continue to evolve, we aim to break down traditional barriers and highlight the vital contributions women bring to national security, peacekeeping, and global stability. Strength in Unity Our belief is simple: strength emerges from unity. By empowering women to stand alongside their male counterparts, we’re creating a defence force that’s adaptable, resilient, and prepared for modern challenges. Strength in Unity isn’t just a phrase—it’s a commitment to fostering an inclusive, effective defence sector. By embracing the unique perspectives and skills women offer, we create a force ready to face complex issues from all angles. Power in Diversity Diversity fuels innovation and strategic thinking, especially in defence. Women bring varied backgrounds and experiences that enrich decision-making and cultivate a culture of inclusivity. Power in Diversity reflects our dedication to embracing these differences, understanding that a diverse team is not only stronger but better equipped to navigate the multifaceted demands of defence. Leadership with Purpose Women are not only participating but leading with intention and impact. From the front lines to leadership roles, they exemplify courage and commitment. Leadership with Purpose showcases their dedication to setting new standards in defence leadership, inspiring others, and paving the way for a secure, forward-looking future. Together, Strength in Unity, Power in Diversity, and Leadership with Purpose form the core of Women Empowering Defence. Our mission is to create a more equitable, dynamic, and powerful defence sector—where every voice is valued, every perspective matters, and leadership is defined by vision and capability, not gender.

In our latest #WEDAsks Interview, we feature Jessica Green, Business Operations Manager at VIVO Defence Services. With over a decade of experience, Jess has built a career rooted in leadership, adaptability, and continuous growth. Career & Leadership Insights: Jess’s journey began in asylum accommodation services before transitioning to defence. While she never followed a strict career plan, she embraced opportunities that aligned with her strengths. "Not having a set plan allowed me to explore different roles and discover what I truly enjoy—leading teams, driving operations, and making an impact." Overcoming Challenges & Breaking Barriers: Balancing a demanding career with parenthood remains one of her greatest challenges, requiring strong support and careful planning. She also highlights the mental load many women carry, which can slow career progression. "Women often juggle responsibilities that aren’t always visible, making leadership roles more complex. But confidence, connections, and recognising your own achievements are key to success." Advice for Future Leaders: For young women starting their careers, Jess encourages them to embrace opportunities, build strong networks, and find fulfillment in their work. "You don’t need to have it all figured out. Surround yourself with people who challenge and inspire you, and choose a path that makes you happy." Thank you, Jess, for sharing your journey and inspiring future leaders in defence. ✨ Courageous Leaders: Women Who Challenge the Status Quo ✨ On Tuesday evening, WED hosted its annual International Women's Day event, bringing together over 140 attendees at the stunning Palo Alto Networks offices—Europe’s highest! Our incredible panellists—Col Lucy Giles, Cdre Alison Hofman RRC KHNS Chartered FCIPD QARNNS, Superintendent Elaina Usher, and Emma Morgan—led an inspiring discussion, expertly chaired by Nikki Rumbold. Their authenticity, insights, and powerful contributions resonated deeply with the audience. Key themes of the evening included: 💡 The power of authentic leadership—leading by example and fostering inclusive cultures. 💡 The fine line between being seen as assertive vs. aggressive and how women in leadership navigate these perceptions. 💡 The courage to challenge the status quo, even when it’s uncomfortable. As one speaker put it: "Yes, you are going to feel uncomfortable. Yes, it’s going to be hard. But is that reason enough not to do it?" The stories shared were a strong reminder that diverse leadership builds stronger, more resilient teams, a crucial factor in the defence and security sectors. A huge thank you to our panellists, attendees, and Palo Alto Networks for hosting such a meaningful event! 🚀 #Leadership #CourageousLeaders #WomenEmpoweringDefence #IWD #ChallengingTheStatusQuo #StengthInUnity #PowerInDiversity #LeadingWithPurpose #WeAreWED

#InternationalWomensDay2025 | #WomenEmpoweringDefence Investing in women and girls isn’t just the right thing to do—it’s the smart thing to do. When women are empowered, industries thrive, innovation accelerates, and progress becomes unstoppable. Yet, too often, barriers remain that prevent women and girls from reaching their full potential. Breaking these barriers isn’t just about fairness; it’s about strengthening organisations, driving innovation, and ensuring long-term success. This International Women’s Day, we stand behind the UN Women UK 2025 theme: “For ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.” In defence and security, true strength comes from diversity, collaboration, and equal opportunity. Women and girls bring critical skills, fresh perspectives, and innovative leadership that enhance decision-making, problem-solving, and operational effectiveness. By investing in them, we build a more capable, resilient, and forward-thinking future for all. But investment isn’t just about representation—it’s about action. It means fostering inclusive cultures, supporting career advancement, and ensuring that women and girls have the resources, opportunities, and recognition they deserve. It means breaking down barriers and challenging outdated mindsets. Most importantly, it means making meaningful commitments that drive real, measurable change. This IWD 2025, let’s move beyond words and into action. Let’s work together to create an environment where all women and girls can thrive—because progress for women and girls is progress for everyone. #ForAllWomenAndGirls #RightsEqualityEmpowerment #WomenEmpoweringDefence #StrengthInUnity #PowerInDiversity #LeadingWithPurpose #IWD25
