"I still don't think they recognised my achievements." Meet Monica Vaughan, ten-time Paralympic medallist in swimming and Britain's most successful Paralympian at the 1976 Games in Toronto. Monica was absolutely unbeatable at her first Games, yet she still didn't get the true sporting recognition she deserved. In our latest episode of the Women in Sport podcast, we chat to Monica about her early years, the Paralympics and what it means to be a disabled woman in sport. Monica also played an important part of the history of Women in Sport, having chaired the organisation from 1990 to 1993, so we are honoured to be catching up with her in our 40th anniversary year. "The role of woman in the world remains as it always has been. She is above all a companion to man, the future mother of the family and should be brought up with such a fate in mind." This is a real quote from Pierre du Coubertin, President of the International Olympic Committee from 1896-1924. Considering the IOC's roots, it perhaps should not be surprising that Paris 2024 - 'the first gender-equal Olympics' - wasn't really equal. Read our latest blog where we discuss the highs and lows of the 2024 Olympics and call for better leadership for equality: https://lnkd.in/eGSmU-zq

“Because it makes me happy”😇 Flashback to a couple of weeks ago when Georgia Bell won bronze in the women’s 1500m at the Paris Olympics. Here’s what made Georgia an unlikely Olympian 👉 ❌ She hadn’t stepped on a track for five years. ❌ She gave up on elite running and started a full-time job. ❌ She didn’t think it was possible. But that all changed during Covid when she started running again after a five-year break. Georgia took part in a few Parkruns and started training with her old coach again. Three years later, she won the the Olympic bronze 🤩 Georgia’s story goes to show it’s never too late to achieve your goals and that enjoying your sport is all that matters. Congratulations Georgia 👏 #Paris2024 #Olympics #Olympics2024

Fantastic to be a part of the Women and Golf panel discussion yesterday ahead of the AIG Women's Golf Open in St Andrews starting today. Our CEO Stephanie Hilborne joined some epic women in golf to discuss how to grow women's grassroots golf and how to break down the remaining barriers to equality. It was brilliant to share the stage with TV presenter Iona Stephen and Scotland's No. 1 female golfer Gemma Dryburgh, as well as women's sport advocate Mia Baker and Founder of the UK's Women's Golf Community Jasmine, AKA The Jazzy Golfer. St Andrews golf course was built during the reign of Mary Queen of Scots (1542-1567). The former Queen played the game herself, yet in subsequent centuries, women were less welcome. Times are changing; Gemma and all the women taking part in the Open this week are leading the charge. Gemma's parents were watching on and her Dad was on fire with his questions from the floor, like "how is it okay that broadcasters give the following reasons for not covering more women's golf?" Here are just two of the reasons broadcasters give for essentially ignoring women's golf... 🤬 "There just aren't the characters out there that there are in the men's"... Yet we aren't allowed to meet our great female players. 🥱 "People think women's golf is dull" .....filming bias means women's golf is often only covered using one camera following the leading player. By comparison, men's golf coverage has a camera at each hole so there's never a dull moment. And we wonder why women's golf is called dull - they're not showing most of what's happening 🙄 Real change happens when we come together, share experiences, bolster resolve, and make a commitment to demand change. Good luck to all the brilliant women competing in the St Andrews Open over the next few days ⛳ Mercury Communications Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa UK Women's Golf Community

Did you know that teenage girls are much more likely than teenage boys to say they are no longer sporty, despite enjoying PE in primary school? Teenage girls are much more likely than teenage boys to say they are no longer sporty, despite enjoying PE in primary school. This dropout is deeply concerning and widespread, with generation after generation of girls falling out of love with sport in their teenage years. Here are just some of reasons girls give for disengaging: 🌟 Motivation: no longer able to take part just for fun (32%) 📚 Priority: too busy with schoolwork (27%) 🏆 Value: it’s no longer important to me (25%) Teenage girls need our help. They have been let down time and time again, society continuing to devalue the importance of sport in their lives. This means they miss out on the multitude of things sport can give them: a sense of freedom, skills to help them succeed in life and importantly, a refuge from the rising anxiety we see in teenage girls. Here’s how we can stop this: https://lnkd.in/eW4-Y_Ck
