The new childcare funding kicked in this week. Eligible parents can now access 15 hours of funding, term time only, for all children from 9 months old. The aim was to close the gap between parental leave and returning to work, but because no-one in Westminster is looking at the holistic experience of parents, they failed to spot a glaring issue. Due to the way the funding has been set up, it forces parents (mainly mothers) to change their return to work date if they want to access the full amount of funding. Funding starts on 3 dates a year, if you miss a date then you will have to pay full price for up to 3 months. Our research found that 1 in 3 mothers changed their return to work date, with a quarter (28%) returning to work before they are ready as it will save them hundreds of pounds. This should concern us all. We know that if mums return to work before they are ready they are much more likely to leave the labour market altogether and more likely to experience mental health issues.
