Despite the growing number of female entrepreneurs, the start-up world is still a boy’s club—one where millions of dollars are required for entry. Harvard Business Review found that female entrepreneurs receive only about 2% of all venture funding, despite owning 38% of the businesses in the country. Although Spanx’s Sarah Blakely and Glossier’s Emily Weiss have forged a path for female founders to turn their ideas into multibillion-dollar companies, the ideas of countless women still never make it out of the boardroom. From the office to the boardroom, gender bias continues to plague the start-up industry. TechCrunch reports less than3% of all venture capital (VC) investment went to women-led companies, and only one-fifth of U.S. VC went to startups with at least one woman on the founder team in 2019. In terms of overall amount of money invested, Forbes reported that In 2018, male founders raised $109 billion in VC funding in the U.S., while female founders only managed to raise $2.86 billion. Unfortunately, this statistic has not changed much. Although more and more females are stepping into entrepreneurial roles, they struggle to secure funding to grow their businesses. The longevity of start-ups is directly correlated with funding, which means that not only are women-led companies in the minority, but also they are caught in a self-reinforcing cycle of gender bias. In the construction industry, whether a building is rising or being torn down, huge amounts of waste are recklessly dumped, with little regard for the environmental damage. I can't help but think about this every time I visit cities like New York, Chicago, or Miami, where high-rises and rapid urban renewal are transforming neighborhoods at breakneck speed. Joanne Rodriguez, the founder and CEO of Mycocycle, is tackling this enormous environmental problem. Through 30 years of experience in the construction materials industry, Rodriguez saw firsthand the environmental damage caused when petrochemical-laden building materials fill up landfills. One in every three girls may not have access to menstrual products, something researchers are dubbing "period poverty." “Our study highlights the widespread nature of period poverty and the need for broad actions -- both locally and nationally -- to increase the affordability and accessibility of these products for youth,” said study lead author Meleah Boyle, a staff scientist at Children's National Hospital in Washington, D.C. Low income and other factors may be keeping young girls and women from what is an essential product, Boyle and her team reported Saturday at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in Orlando, Fla. According to the study authors, prior research has suggested that 11.9 million U..S. girls and women now struggle to find access to menstrual products. Failing to do so could raise risks for urinary tract infections and bacterial vaginosis, and trigger absences from school or work. In the new study, researchers queried 678 girls, averaging about 16 years of age, who visited a hospital's pediatric emergency department. First lady Jill Biden has announced that the Pentagon is committing more than $500 million annually for research into women's health, as the Biden administration has prioritized improving the lives of women. Biden announced the investment Monday during a Clinton Global Initiative talk alongside Chelsea Clinton, the daughter of former U.S. President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice, in New York City. She explained that the money will go toward studying arthritis, chronic fatigue and cardiovascular health. A statement from the Department of Defense says that the half-billion-dollar investment for women's health research will primarily come through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs, a Department of Defense program that receives funding for specific biomedical research. Common women’s health conditions like menstruation, menopause and PCOS can be incredibly painful and make it hard to complete normal work duties when symptoms arise. While women account for nearly half the workforce, few employers have implemented policies or created cultures recognizing and offering support. But some are beginning to. Astrology app and media company CHANI offers unlimited paid menstrual leave for staff. Under the policy staff can reach out to their supervisor and let them know they are taking that leave, and most staff typically take one day or a half day off. “Having a uterus can be very painful, and if you are experiencing menstrual pain or menopausal pain, you are neither sick nor on vacation,” said CHANI co-founder and CEO Sonya Passi. “We don’t want employees to deplete their sick days when they’re not sick, and we don’t want employees to work through pain.” Menopause is another condition women experience that can make it difficult to carry on with their regular working routines. Since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling in 2022, taking away abortion as a constitutional right, 14 states have banned abortion. Then, in February, the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos are considered “children” and that a person could be held liable for destroying them. Following the judicial order, some healthcare providers in the state suspended in vitro fertilization (IVF) services. Experts warn that these changes in laws relating to abortion and IVF could create mistrust and instill a fear of sharing medical records among women, creating ripple effects in clinical research into female reproductive health. Christopher Hart, a partner at the law firm Foley Hoag, noted that reproductive rights are currently fragmented across the U.S. While some states have voted to protect women’s rights to abortion, others have opted to ban them. These restrictive laws have created a hostile environment, he added. Massachusetts was among the first states to pass a shield law “to, as much as possible, protect reproductive health data from falling into the hands of hostile prosecutors in other states or hostile private parties seeking such information,” Hart said on BioSpace’s Denatured podcast.
