Updates

  • Some fantastic drone shots as we start to see the unique shape of the new Paisley Grammar School emerge on site. The project, designed by Ryder Architecture for Renfrewshire Council is delivering secondary school accommodation for 1,380 pupils on the site of a former Chivas bottling plant. State-of-the-art teaching facilities will include in- and outdoor sports facilities, workshops, kitchens, and a 300-seat theatre. With classrooms split across three teaching wings, long column free spans create double and triple height plazas within the building. Given the site’s industrial history, our geo-environmental team worked to investigate and remediate ground contamination, collaborating with our civils team overseeing the earthworks to ensure this didn’t hold up the programme. The school is set to welcome pupils in 2026. #engineeredbywoolgarhunter #civilengineering

  • 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘆 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 The last Scottish Property Awards nominated development Woolgar Hunter worked on this year is Drum Property Group's Merchant City development incorporating Candleriggs and The Social Hub (B Corp™). The project delivered 300 new BTR flats and a 500 bed apart-hotel in a development that brought a long disused site back to life. Drum Property Group is nominated for Property Company of the Year, while The Social Hub is nominated for Commercial Development and PBSA Development of the Year, and Halliday Fraser Munro are nominated in Architectural Excellence for their work on the building. Candleriggs is nominated for Regeneration Project and BTR Development of the Year. This was the second major city centre masterplan Woolgar Hunter has engineered for Drum, following the Barclays campus at Buchanan Wharf. Good luck to all the nominees! 📷 GRAHAM Group/Candleriggs

  • 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘆 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 Another Scottish Property Awards shortlisted project Woolgar Hunter worked on this year is the Moda's Holland Park BTR development, which is shortlisted for BTR Development of the Year, while HAUS Collective is nominated for Architectural Excellence for the project. The development comprises 433 apartments of varying sizes in a masterplan of four connected towers, occupying a full city block. The premises also contain significant tenant amenities, including a gym, cinema, games room and 'sky lounges' with panoramic views of the city. The project also made a real commitment to bolstering jobs and skills in the local community. 24 apprenticeships were created working on the project, while 120 young people received on-site training or experience. • 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘆 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 The next Scottish Property Awards nominated building Woolgar Hunter worked on is East Calder Primary School, developed by West Lothian Council and Hub South East Scotland Limited. They are nominated for Public Development of the Year, while designers NORR are nominated in Architectural Excellence. The LEIP 2 funded project set out to design a building that could serve as an exemplar in whole life carbon reduction, while providing a fun and nurturing learning environment for 460 pupils. The unique triangular building form creates dynamic hallways and exciting learning spaces, while the school's energy performance levels meet Passive House standards. Woolgar Hunter has worked on many schools with Hub South East, including primary, secondary and ASN facilities, and we're delighted to add this fun, highly sustainable West Lothian development to the list. Good luck!

  • 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘆 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 Ahead of the Scottish Property Awards this week, we wanted to spotlight some of the nominated projects Woolgar Hunter has worked on this year. First is Aurora, developed by Forma Real Estate Funds and HFD, shortlisted for Best Commercial Development, Best Deal and Best Net Zero Project. The project extensively refurbished the iconic Bothwell St building, delivering over 170,000sq ft of flexible Grade A office space. The new development is one of the most sustainable office developments in Scotland, with net-zero operational carbon, and has remarkable tenant amenities including a fitness suite, roof terraces and extensive cycle infrastructure. This project was the latest in a long working relationship between Woolgar Hunter and HFD, including a number of developments on Bothwell St. Good luck for the big night!

  • 𝗙𝗲𝗺𝗘𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗼𝘁𝘀𝘄𝗮𝗻𝗮 The WH team enjoyed a great presentation last week from FemEng in Botswana. The group of female and non-binary engineering students from the University of Glasgow organise international outreach trips, designed to encourage schoolchildren, particularly girls, to pursue careers in STEM. The team presented on the success of their 2024 trip to Botswana - which Woolgar Hunter Engineers sponsored - with more than 1000 pupils attending their interactive workshops on understanding core engineering concepts, as well the plans for their upcoming summer 2025 trip. WH Project Engineer and FemEng alumni Paola Pappas presented on our work across a range of sectors, giving the students greater insight into some of the work engineers in Scotland are doing today. FemEng International trips saw a 50% increase in applications to STEM courses at the University of Rwanda, following trips there in previous years. We are delighted to work with FemEng and support their work to reduce access barriers to engineering for women both in Scotland and internationally.
