Research published earlier this year showed that Gen Z employees lost more days of productivity because of poor mental health, than those over 50. This group have a lot to offer so what's behind this data? There are significant workplace challenges for our young people, who in many cases are just starting to develop strategies needed to cope with the competitive pressure of work. That said, they should be credited for recognising when they are feeling overwhelmed and heading towards burnout. How much do you think workplace sickness is costing businesses right now? An IPPR report quoted in People Management recently found it totalled £103bn in 2023, up £30bn since 2018. The majority of the cost increase was caused by lower productivity from 'presenteeism', staff working through sickness. We suggested to People Management that stigma plays a "huge role" here, particularly for those who are experiencing poor mental health. Furthermore, we raise concern about the longer-term impact to individuals and businesses if 'presenteeism' isn't addressed. How do you keep your staff healthy? Recent figures show there were 2.8 million people long term sick from January to March of this year. The UK is the only major economy with fewer people in employment than prior to the pandemic because of long term sickness. (Source: ONS) The DWP work capability assessments show that 69% of those ill are claiming for mental health disorders. Employers can really make a difference to these staggering statistics by ensuring they take a robust approach to supporting the wellbeing of staff.
