About us
The World Energy Council is the world's oldest independent and impartial community of energy leaders and practitioners. Through our Humanising Energy vision, we involve more people and communities in accelerating clean and just energy transitions in all world regions. Formed in 1923, the Council has convened diverse interests from across the full energy ecosystem for a century, and today has over 3,000 member organisations and a presence in nearly 100 countries. Our global network draws from governments, private and state corporations, academia and civil society, as well as current and future energy leaders. We effectively collaborate on impact programmes and inform local, regional and global energy agendas in support of our enduring mission: to promote the sustainable use and supply of energy for the benefit of all people. The Council convenes leadership dialogues including the World Energy Congress to enable new collaborations and drive impact; and provides a range of practical tools including the World Energy Trilemma Framework to define, support and better manage energy transitions.

🌐 100 years ago, the World Energy Council community was established by visionary leadership that recognised the task and challenge of rebuilding energy systems to deliver peace. Daniel Dunlop, the Council's founder, wanted to go beyond creating a purely technical institution. He told a friend: “I always had in mind the idea of enlarging this body of engineers to a body of experts of all branches of industry and agriculture.” The emphasis on convening truly global hearts, minds and hands continues to empower the Council’s mission and vision today. A century after Dunlop planted his initial seed, the Council has blossomed into a vibrant community across 100+ nations. 👉 Find out more about Dunlop’s vision below, and our history here: https://lnkd.in/d7yahpRq #humanisingenergy #energytransition #energyleadership #cleanenergy #energysystems

Last week, our Secretary General and CEO Dr Angela Wilkinson delivered a video keynote at the 2024 China Petroleum and Chemical International Conference (#CPCIC), and spoke about the 5 hard truths the world’s energy leaders learned from our 100th anniversary 26th World Energy Congress in Rotterdam: 1. World energy systems are no longer fit for purpose. 2. All signals point to an overshoot of 1.5 degree Celsius and extreme weather events are disrupting energy systems. 3. New consumer-driven energy shocks and access and affordability crises are everywhere. 4. The renewables revolution is at risk, and not all energy uses can be electrified. 5. Energy is an existential issue for many, especially millions of people in Africa. Our Asia Director, Xiaowei Liu also delivered two keynotes during CPCIC 2024 at the Future Energy Forum and Female Leadership Forum, where she spoke about how much can be learned from Asia’s energy transitions journeys. China, for example, has hit its renewable power generation capacity six years ahead of its original 2030 target thanks to concrete implementation actions. Dr Wilkinson also shared that new models of energy transitions are emerging across the world and emphasised the need to learn from each other’s expertise and experiences to make energy transitions happen at speed and scale. The World Energy Council, as the world’s premier independent, impartial, and neutral energy + community, has the power to convene and lead these conversations. Engaging diverse communities and people is the key to making faster, fairer and farther-reaching energy transitions happen, and is at the heart of our mission. #Energytransition #energyleadership #humanisingenergy #renewables #sustainability
