The 2024 Future Cities—Africa Green Building Summit is taking place in Lagos, Nigeria, from today through to the end of Friday this week, 19 July. Green Building Council Nigeria is hosting the event, which will bring together our Africa Regional Network (ARN) of Green Building Councils (GBCs). 🌍 Cities in Africa are expanding rapidly but face barriers from resource constraints, alongside socio-economic and governance challenges. This event will engage stakeholders across the African continent with the Africa Manifesto for Sustainable Cities and the Built Environment. The Africa manifesto developed by our ARN GBCs champions the needs of rapidly growing cities on the continent. 🌆 The event's theme is ‘Building Resilient Futures: Integrating Carbon Neutrality, Circular Economy & Inclusive Urban Development’, inspired by our Global Policy Principles for a Sustainable Built Environment. 🎟️ Tickets are free and you can attend in person or remotely. What will be the biggest driver of change? Dr. Olufunso Somorin, Regional Principal Officer at African Development Bank Group spoke passionately about policy and economic incentives at our Global Solutions Forum. Olufunso said that economic incentives can help unlock capital to promote #sustainable practices in the #builtenvironment. But we must work together to ensure a future for generations to come. Sustainable buildings offer an opportunity to adapt and mitigate #climatechange. Why is finance key to #BuildingTheTransition? Where does the market currently stand and what needs to happen to create real and lasting change? During our 2024 Leadership Summit, where we met with sustainability change-makers from across the globe, knowledge sharing was a key highlight on the agenda. This Thought Leadership piece written by Anna Emmison, Partner, Knight Frank Valuation & Advisory, ESG Lead, Knight Frank, explores a key theme of the Summit – finance. Find out more: https://bit.ly/3zzIH3d A huge thank you from us to Knight Frank for sponsoring the 2024 WorldGBC Leadership Summit and Global Solutions Forum, 'Building the Transition’, which took place in London, UK, from 24–27 June 2024. We will not achieve a zero carbon built environment without the building and construction sector. Governments, business and finance, but most importantly the people behind them, must act now and collaborate to rise to the 2030 climate challenge. Akshat Rathi, Senior Reporter for Climate at Bloomberg News, reiterates that even though this seems unnatural for competitors, we have no choice or the problems we are seeing now will get worse. It will take all of us working together to be a positive force for change. We have 2,000 days to pivot and rise to the climate challenge. The #decarbonisation of buildings will improve communities and that’s why we convened in London with our global network — to align and build momentum. More than 50 Green Building Councils took part, with partners, colleagues, leaders, speakers and friends all united in a journey of transformation for our #builtenvironment. This time allowed us to get inspired to mobilise governments, the finance community and changemakers. Our network alone covers 60% of the world's building stock and 65% of global GDP, while the countries represented account for 72% of built environment emissions. Our CEO, Cristina Gamboa, highlights the time for urgency in her recent blog: https://bit.ly/4eS0nra When we all push in the same direction, we can be an unstoppable force for change. With just under 2,000 days remaining to achieve the 2030 climate goals set by the World Green Building Council, our industry’s next steps in #BuildingtheTransition will be crucial in shaping the future. At the recent World Green Building Council Leadership Summit held at Sidara’s London Headquarters, 150 Holborn, 52 Green Building Councils and numerous built environment leaders from around the world convened to share ideas and create tangible impacts from the WGBC's strategy, which will bring us a step closer to the goals we're set to reach over the next six years. 37% of the world's emissions come from the built environment. Removing, or even significantly reducing this, will be no small feat to accomplish. As a host venue for the summit and active member, we recognize that our greatest opportunity to have a positive impact on the planet and in our communities is through the projects we touch. From large-scale solar farms in West Africa that dramatically reduce emissions to improving biodiversity at the first-ever on-site apiary at one of America's busiest airports, we are committed to delivering solutions that reduce emissions, protect biodiversity, and safeguard the place we all call home.
