🏢 Signatories of the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment (the Commitment) are dedicated to #decarbonising their assets and promoting advanced climate leadership action. A bold approach is required to meet our #climategoals. In our new series, ‘From Commitment to Action,’ we spotlight the work already being done by Commitment signatories. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) is a global practice of architects, designers, engineers, and planners responsible for some of the world’s most technically and environmentally advanced buildings and significant public spaces. SOM joined the Commitment in 2018. The business has committed to cutting its carbon emissions across every area of its leased office spaces and has implemented various actions to reduce its direct and indirect emissions, such as: 💡 Smart technology, such as lighting systems and occupancy sensors, are used to control and minimise the use of artificial lighting. ♻️ The Urban Sequoia project sets the stage for a carbon removal economy and resilient cities. An Urban Sequoia building would absorb more than 300% of the carbon emitted in its construction and operation. And the technology for this project already exists. Read the full interview with SOM below. Commitment signatories like SOM are #BuildingTheTransition. Are you ready to join? #NZCBCommitment #WGBW24 #BuildingToCOP #BuildingToCOP29

Ask yourself this: How can we embed water circularity into our projects to manage water more effectively? If we redefine water as a resource for value creation and implement circular principles across the world, we could unlock $4.5 trillion of value. Water is one of our most valuable resources. However, the #builtenvironment is putting increasing pressure on this already overburdened global resource. In support of World Water Week, 25—29 August 2024, WorldGBC partners Arup will explore how water circularity can be incorporated into #builtenvironment projects to manage water more effectively and create a more water-resilient future. 🎟️ Register here: https://bit.ly/3WS2LXG 🗓️ 29 August 2024 ⏰ 14:00—15:00 CEST 🌊 Join us and discover how to unlock a business case for adopting circular water systems. #BuildingTheTransition #WWWeek #BuildingToCOP #BuildingToCOP29

  • 🌏 Boola Katitjin means ‘Lots of learning’ in Noongar — the official language of the Aboriginal people of the south-west of Western Australia. Education is very important within indigenous communities and a great deal can be learned from Traditional Owners. Indigenous people have done this for years to take care of the land. Boola Katitjin is a building within Murdoch University and the largest Mass-Engineered Timber building in Western Australia. Timber is a renewable material, and all the timber used in its construction has already been regrown. This timber university building honours Aboriginal Australians through design. This building strives to be environmentally and socially conscious. This building was featured on BBC StoryWorks — a series that shows how long-term thinking can lift people up without letting the planet down. • 📽 Introducing the #DrasticProject’s Spanish Demonstrator! 📽 Attending to the structural layer of buildings, Drastic’s Spanish Demonstrator tackles two materials that can have the largest environmental impact within the built environment life cycle: cement and steel. With no established ecosystem for the disassembly and reuse of structural steel elements, this Demonstrator looks to implement and prove the feasibility of such a system. As well as this, this project aims to repurpose a by-product from the secondary steelmaking process, known as white slag, via its application as a supplementary material within concrete. Drastic is a pioneering initiative that aims to demonstrate affordability, sustainability and circularity within the built environment via a collection of innovative European pilot projects known as 'Demonstrators’. For our latest episode, we (Kira Gould and Lindsay Baker) spoke with Cristina Gamboa. She is CEO of the World Green Building Council, an influential local-regional-global network focused on “the transformation to sustainable and decarbonized built environments for everyone, everywhere.” She is an economist with a background in sustainability, policy, and multi-stakeholder partnerships and is a convener in international settings, such as UN Climate Change and World Economic Forum. Cristina is from Colombia and lives in London. Before she came to this work, she was an academic economist with a focus on international affairs and a passion for communicating. “Collectively, we’ve had a huge win, getting buildings on the global climate agenda. But with visibility comes responsibility,” she says. “Now we have to make sure that the private sector is empowered to deliver progress.” She points out that the finance community understands that buildings are the largest global asset class, and this is an opportunity. “If we get this right, they can invest in better assets,” she says. “If we work with the finance community and we find ways to delink emissions from growth and make sure that the retrofit economy really lifts off, we could unlock the benefits of a carbon-free and circular economy.” Great strides have been made, she adds, but there is work to do: “We have a more cohesive voice, more global alignment, and buildings are firmly in the conversation. However, we still don’t have aggregated data to show change at scale. This is a gap that makes our movement vulnerable. The sooner we can quantify benefits, the better.” Listen at https://lnkd.in/gSMrPiih or on your favorite podcast platform. The measures in the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) are designed to lead to an energy-efficient and decarbonised EU building stock by 2050. But how will national governments implement them? The World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) has launched new factsheets to provide guidance and actions on two key measures introduced in May this year: Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and Life Cycle Global Warming Potential (GWP). The factsheets give an overview of the new measures and set out how these can be implemented in an easy-to-follow timeline of action points. The factsheets also include a simple checklist that shows the conditions that need to be met at the national level to be ready to fulfil the EPBD measures, alongside recommendations for regulations, information and incentives. With only two years now before member states have to transpose these new measures into their own national frameworks, we encourage national governments, EU policymakers, and the building and construction industry to accelerate action, and use the recommendations in the factsheets to support a transition to a prosperous and equitable future for Europe with sustainable buildings at its heart. WorldGBC will be working together with our Europe Regional Network of GBCs and partners to support the implementation of the EPBD, and eliminate the whole life carbon impact of buildings.
