About us

The Worshipful Company of Coopers is one of the oldest in the City of London. In modern times it has evolved into the trustee of six principal charities and a social and charitable enterprise that retains an identity focused on the ancient craft of cask making. We welcome members to enjoy a fellowship around our shared values and an interest in the history, culture and charitable endeavours that our company has pursued for the last 500 or so years.

An incredible day last Thursday at St Paul’s Cathedral as Master of the Worshipful Company of Coopers for the annual Service of Dedication of the Imperial Society of Knights Bachelor. Amazing to be in the company of Knights and to share this wonderful day. Actor and Knight, Sir Ben Kingsley gave an impassioned reading and four new worthy individuals celebrated joining this exclusive band. After the ceremony, we retired to the Apothecaries Hall for a splendid reception. What a day!

  • Earlier this week, we held our final Court Meeting before the summer break at The Worshipful Company of Coopers. We are delighted to announce the swearing-in of two new Assistants, Alistair Hutchinson and Paul Frame, onto the Court, marking the continuation of our cherished traditions that have endured for many centuries. Congratulations to our new Assistants. We look forward to the contributions they will make in the coming years. #Tradition #Heritage #Leadership #WorshipfulCompanyOfCoopers #Ceremony

As Master of the Worshipful Company of Coopers I was invited to the Constables Reception at the Tower of London yesterday evening. We had a private tour of the Crown Jewels, including many of those used in the coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla. We watched the Beating Retreat performed by the Royal Marine Band followed by a lovely drinks reception. What an honour to attend!

I am the Wine Warden for the Worshipful Company of Coopers and in addition to the Company itself, another major passion of mine is wine. This evening, ion the eve of the Euro cup final, it was essential to crack open a bottle of something special to enjoy with the footy! Dominus, Napa, California, 2007.This really is an exceptional wine, one of California’s very, very best. Christian Mouix of France’s Petrus fame, is the owner and the same skill and care goes into the vineyard and cellar. This was a very good vintage in Napa and at 26 years old, this is now only just entering its drinking window. Cabernet Sauvignon in excelsis. Incredible perfume, cherry kirsh liqueur, violets, a whif of liquorish and mint. A black-purple colour, no signs of ageing. On the palate, the power builds. Elegance and poise, amazing depth of fruit, damsons and black cherry, a savoury note, leafy, cedar, really fine, supple tannins, hint of mocha on the finish. So long, profound, an exceptional wine. Around £270 a bottle.

Yesterday, despite the odd burst of heavy rain, Sarah and I had an incredible tour of many of Wren’s Churches on the City of London Church Tour. This tour was specially arranged by the Worshipful Company of Plumbers for Masters of the Livery Companies and their Consorts. We started off in the Crypt at St Paul’s for a briefing by our Blue Badge City of London guides, with coffee and bacon rolls. The tour comprised the initial stop at St Paul’s, St Vedast on Foster Lane, St Mary le Bow (famous as the church of Bow Bells fame) on Cheapside, St Mary Aldermary on Bow Lane, St Stephen Walbrook on Walbrook by Mansion House, St Mary Abchurch on Abchurch Lane, St Magnus the Martyr on Lower Thames Street, where we stopped for lunch. After lunch we moved on to The Monument at Fish Street, a monument to the Great fire of London and whilst not a church, it was built on the site of a church destroyed in the Great Fire and in keeping with the theme, was a Wren design. After that we went to see St Mary at Hill on Lovat Lane, then St Margaret Pattens on Eastcheap and our final church was St Dunstans in the East, on St Dunstans Hill. After that we retired o the Worshipful Company of Bakers Hall for tea and pastries. I would really encourage you to visit any of the churches if you are in the City with a bit of time to spare. They are all so rich in history, most have incredible structures inside, with amazing artefacts and design features. A long but fascinating day. The Worshipful Company of Coopers

  • Earlier this week our Master Leigh Johnson attended the Masters and Clerks’ evening at the Leathersellers' Company. Held in the historic and beautifully renovated Leathersellers' Hall, which blends stunning modern design with its rich heritage, the venue was an architectural marvel. The evening was tremendous, with over 100 guests enjoying sumptuous food and wine. It was a truly convivial event, enriched by great traditions and ceremony.

Hello all, I am in the final stretch of my Master's Degree in International Heritage Management at the University of Birmingham! My dissertation is focussed on Intangible Cultural Heritage in Livery Companies. If you could please fill in my survey and share with your friends I would be eternally grateful. You do not have to be a member of a Livery Company or know anything about them. If you do, it's a bonus! Eloise x
