The 17th Century Revival in Stained Glass #Webinar: Thursday 31 October 2024 at 18.00 GMT Dr Mark Kirby is Child-Shuffrey Research Fellow in Architectural History at Lincoln College, #Oxford. After many years at the Bank of England and in other regulatory and public policy roles, Dr Kirby returned to academia in 2014 to take his life-long interest in #architectural #history to a deeper level. His #research focuses on the interplay between architecture and #church history in the 17th century, and how #religious belief is expressed in #artistic and architectural term. He is currently applying these interests specifically to Lincoln College Chapel, in the run up to the 600th anniversary in 2027 of the College’s #foundation. Dr Kirby will explore the 17th century’s move away from strict Protestantism and towards beautifying church #interiors again. The Bishop of Lincoln paid for the refitting of the College Chapel, consecrated in 1631, with windows by Abraham Van Linge, and the east window designs, depicting parallel scenes from the Old and New Testaments, show him at the height of his #powers. The webinar will be chaired by Stephen Chater, Master’s Steward for 2024. After reading Modern History at Oxford, Stephen spent almost 40 years working as a #solicitor in the City of London. He is now a City of London Guide Lecturer and chairs two #heritage charities. We will also be joined by the Master Glazier, Clive Osborne. How to book a place: Register on Eventbrite here: https://lnkd.in/euwC-DFJ Confirmed attendees will subsequently receive a link to access the webinar session when they have registered via Eventbrite, with another reminder 24 hours before the event. Tickets cost £5.50 plus the Eventbrite booking fee.

We were delighted that two Freemen of the Company, Dayu Guo and Ling Jin, took the oath and were admitted as Freemen of the City of London today. Tiphaine Le Bain was very welcoming and full of fascinating information about the historical origins of the Freedom and the many outstanding individuals who have received the Honorary Freedom. It was also good to see the pane of 19th century stained glass that the Glaziers’ Company donated to the Chamberlain’s Court. A very happy and impressive occasion. The photos show Dayu, Ling, the Clerk Liz Wicksteed and other guests including the reknowned Chinese cinematographer Gu Changwei and fellow Glazier Barbara Storer. Congratulations to the two youngest Freemen of the City!

Helen Whittaker MBE, award winning international artist. The Worshipful Company of Glaziers and Painters of Glass: Masters Visit to Highgate Cemetery 15 October 2024. Helen said "I was delighted to be invited to join Master Clive Osborne’s visit to Highgate to share my commissions for the Cemetery chapel (2012) and nearby St Michael’s Church (2024). Fellow Liveryman and past Highgate Cemetery guide Emma Supple guided the group around the Cemetery’s west side, with its fascinating tombstones, mausoleums and columbarium, sharing the stories of those who rest there. "My 2012 window in St James’ Chapel in the Cemetery features a Cedar of Lebanon tree which stood in the Circle of Lebanon in the grounds for over 250 years, but was sadly removed in 2019 for safety reasons. Depicted in the borders of the window are wild flowers from the Cemetery grounds as well as shells, symbol of St James to whom the Chapel is dedicated. "Following this tour, the group visited St Michael’s Church in Highgate Village, to see my 2024 ‘Hope’ window as well as Evie Hone’s wonderful East window. My ‘Hope’ window explores ideas of the Trinity in vibrant colours and abstract forms, with the cross of Faith and anchor of Hope set against overlapping circles representing the Love of the Divine Trinity." Fortis Consulting London is pleased to showcase the work of Helen Whittaker MBE and Barley Studio. Helen Whittaker MBE is Senior Assistant of The Worshipful Company of Glaziers and Painters of Glass. She is an award-winning designer of stained glass windows, panels and architectural sculpture with 100+ commissions. Helen was selected to help the GREAT Britain & Northern Ireland Campaign showcase talent in the creative sector. Helen is a Craft Scholar of The King's Foundation, and a Fellow of British Society of Master Glass Painters (BSMGP). Helen was a tutor for several years at The King's Foundation School of Traditional Arts.

Glaziers and friends were participating in the #sheepdrive, exercising their rights to do so, as a #freeman of the #cityoflondon. Some The Worshipful Company of Glaziers and Painters of Glass Members came dressed in their traditional outfits, and of course we had our annual lunch afterwards, this time in the pizza place. Thank you to all attending, as well as our supporters and family. Enjoy the #video #glaziersandfriends

Our first, inagural meeting of #glaziersandfriends in the Glaziers Hall, in January 2024. The The Worshipful Company of Glaziers and Painters of Glass, with Master Clive Osborne, with Tim McNally, David Stringer-Lamarre, Marianna C, our Clerk Liz Wicksteed, as well as Assistant Eleanor, we had brought to life an idea of our #livery monthly #networking event. It trully does take a village to create together, to make things happen. In the last 10 months - our circle is growing from strength to #strength. Each months we have our #members as #speakers, stained glass artists present their #arts and #crafts, and so much more. Would you like to join us on the 💥12 November? Do private #message Marianna C for the personal invite and I will be delighted to introduce you to our #network of #glaziers and #friends

All Glaziers, Liverymen and Freemen, were delighted to attend a tour of The Watts Gallery. Its the UK’s only #gallery devoted to the work of a single artist, 'England's Michelangelo' George Frederic Watts OM, RA. Watts Gallery - Artists' Village https://lnkd.in/gPGiTcW He was one of the most #successful British #artists of the 19th century, and his wife Mary Watts, the designer and founder of The Potters’ Arts Guild at Compton. The Gallery was designed by Christopher Hatton Turner and inspired by the Arts and Crafts Movement. Over 100 of Watts’ paintings are displayed there, spanning over 70 years, and including #landscapes, #portraits and symbolic work, with #sculptures and studio artifacts. Our tour #guide was very knowledgable and we had #learned a lot during our private viewing. We had a sandwich lunch at the café after the tour, specially created for us. We had then moved on to Rachel Mulligan #stained #glass studio a few miles away. Rachel have shown us how she goes about her work, and what she has underway at the moment, along with some examples of her Victorian glass from Charterhouse that she is repurposing. Charterhouse School, https://lnkd.in/e5HdqrC2 Archivist, gave us insight and history of the glass and how its been rescued. Despite the rain, we had a great time with tea, prosecco and cake, at Rachel's second #studio. All encompassing day, thank you all for attending. We had a chance to purchse #stainedglass, greeting cards, designed by Rachel, as well as browsing through the Watts gallery #giftshop
