The modern, inclusive Livery Company for the whole insurance market
About us
The Worshipful Company of Insurers is a modern Livery Company promoting excellence in insurance, supporting many charitable causes and engaging in City life. It brings together two key elements of the City of London – Insurance which is now the largest employer within the City, and the City civic where Livery Companies have taken an active part for centuries. There are many professional and social occasions throughout the year, most held in interesting and unusual venues many of which are exclusive to members. As well as offering a better understanding of insurance, these provide opportunities to meet regularly with the key people within the industry. There are groups for Independent Non-Executive Directors (iNED), Women in Insurance (iWIN) and younger members (iENGAGE). All of these have their own educational and social programmes open to all members.

Tonight Worshipful Company of Insurers will celebrate the installation of our new Master, Karl Jarvis at The Worshipful Company of Grocers Hall. The installation is always a moment of celebration in expectation of the year ahead. The Worshipful Company of Grocers is one of the ‘Great Twelve’ Livery Companies of the City of London, ranking second in the order of precedence. The Company originated as the ‘Pepperers’, whose existence as a Guild was first officially recorded in the Pipe Roll of 1180, but undoubtedly, the Guild was already active and had been originally formed earlier. In 1345, Pepperers formed a Fraternity, which was dedicated to St Antonin as their patron saint. The Fraternity was entrusted with the duty of preventing the adulteration of spices and drugs, as well as with the charge of the King's Beam, which weighed the bulk merchandise in which they dealt. This Fraternity came to be known in the 1370s as the ‘Grosseurs’ which reflected their expansion into a wide range of mercantile activity, operating primarily ‘in gross’. This was subsequently anglicised to ‘Grocers’. In 1425, the Grocers acquired the land upon which to build their first Hall, which is where their current Hall resides today. In 1428, the Grocers were granted their first royal charter, thus formally recognising them as a Mystery or Worshipful Livery Company. #cityoflondon #celebration #historicaltraditions #livinghistory

The WCI will be celebrating the Lord Mayor’s show with members, friends and their families in style this year. This year’s Lord Mayor’s Show is on Saturday 9 November. The parade is a tradition that dates back over 800 years and will feature 7000 people, 200 horses, and around 150 floats in a three-mile-long procession to mark the Lord Mayor’s first full day in office. It is a stirring blend of colour and sound and is a great day out for all ages. We are delighted that the WCI has secured the exclusive use of the magnificent Painters' Hall for the day which will serve as a very convenient base for Liverymen/women, family, friends, and sponsors for the day. Members, friends and families will have all-day access to the hall and breakfast, lunch and post-parade food with celebratory fizz are all included • Bacon sandwiches for breakfast • Lasagne and salad at lunchtime • Tea and coffee all day • Finger buffet with a glass of fizz at the conclusion of the day Prices are £55 per adult, and £20 for under 12s and you can book now https://lnkd.in/essaRHMM

Congratulations to Karl Jarvis on his election as the 45th Master of the WCI last night at Common Hall. He takes office for the next year supported by Senior Warden Sara Fardon FCII, FCMI, CMgr and Junior Warden Ajay Gupta. He set out his theme for his year – Levelling up the Playing Field – and explained how the Company would enjoy a high profile in the City Civic over the next few years with Dame Susan Langley and Bronek Masojada both expected to be elevated to the highest office in the City, that of Lady/Lord Mayor. Two new Court Assistants were alao appointed at Common Hall, so congratulations to Paolo Cuomo and ian clark. The meeting received a comprehensive update on the work of its Charitable Trusts from their chair, Katie Wade (FCA). https://lnkd.in/e6V6REZ4

We are always pleased to co-operate with other Livery companies to explore topical issues. Master Claire Burrell joined the panel for this fascinating exploration of our relationship with time.
REBOOTING TICK TOCK TIME Past Master Steve Cant and several colleagues from Worshipful Company of Management Consultants attended the Marketors’ City Lecture 2024 on 3rd October, held at the Museum of Brands near Ladbroke Grove. (An interesting small museum and well worth a visit.) About 50 people gathered to hear author Mark Earls talk about our restrictive relationship with time, how it can hurt our work and relationships, and how we can take back control. Mark gave us a preview of his upcoming best seller; "Stop all the clocks: time travel for beginners" (Not yet available I think). Mark began with a quick review of how time has shaped our society and how it works including the Railways role in standardising time. (He neglected to mention though, the profound effect that measuring time accurately had on the ability to navigate the world and hence transform world trade). Mark's talk was genuinely interesting and engaging. At one point he had us tearing up paper tapes to symbolise how long we thought we had to live. He then asked us how it felt to confront our own mortality in this way! “Not very good” was the unanimous answer. He had us believing in our ability to time travel and indeed I took quite a lot of comfort in the fact that he was really referring to a technique “Future Back Visioning”, helpful when helping organisations, especially charities, think about their futures. Another big takeaway was to really focus on the question “Where are we now?” – honestly and comprehensively – in strategy workshops and the like. Good advice. The evening ended with a short panel discussion led by the Professor Ian Ryder, a lecturer at the University of Cranfield Business school and the current Master of The Worshipful Company of Marketors. On the panel were three other Livery Masters: Kanan Barot, Master of The Management Consultants, Mark Huxley, Master of THE WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF ENTREPRENEURS LTD and Claire Burrell, Master of Worshipful Company of Insurers. In fairness, they really did not have much time to share any great insights, but it was an interesting and engaging event, with a lively reception both before and after the lecture and some great networking beyond the Livery.

WCI Liveryman Laurie Edmans CBE joined other Insurers and hundreds of Liverymen and Liverywomen exercising their ancient right to drive sheep across the bridges of the River Thames yesterday. He gets top marks for his outfit which caught the eye of Lord Mayor Michael Mainelli. Laurie and his grandson Theo grabbed a quick snap with the Lord Mayor.
