The conference season continues, with a change from the scientific events of the past few weeks. On Sunday, I'll be taking part in two activities at the Vegan Party Conference in London. Firstly, a panel discussion at 1pm co-ordinated by our fabulous colleagues at Animal Aid. We'll be talking about "bringing an end to animal testing", covering the ethical, scientific, economic and political reasons why it's time to step up a gear for change. Then at 4pm, I'll be contributing to the assembly session, organised by Bel Jacobs FRSA, on "holding the government to their animal pledges." In particular, I'll be speaking about the labour manifesto promise to “partner with scientists, industry and civil society as we work towards the phasing out of animal testing,” and how we need to have (and implement) a clear roadmap to make this happen. I've been saying for a long time that, to drive positive change in the world, and translate science into societal progress, scientists cannot separate themselves completely from politics and campaigning. Political events are fun in a different way from scientific ones, each equally important, and I'm looking forward to contributing to the debates, to learning new things, meeting new people, and to all the experiences that this weekend will bring!
