'Right to switch off' plans welcomed but legal risks lie ahead for HR - experts warn Conversations surrounding plans to give UK employees a ‘right to switch off’ have been reignited this week, following a Government statement saying it will boost the economy. The new Labour administration has pledged to introduce legal boundaries on when workers can and can’t be contacted outside of set working hours. Similar legislation is in place in nations like the Republic of Ireland and Belgium, which Downing Street is said to be analysing closely. In these counties, staff have the “right to disconnect" and not be frequently contacted by their employer after clocking off for the day. UK job postings up 2.4% in July, finds REC The number of active job postings in July 2024 increased by 2.4% from the previous month, new data has shown. According to the latest Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) and Lightcast Labour Market Tracker, 1,766,963 jobs were advertised in the UK last month, which is still above pre-pandemic levels. UK unemployment falls slightly as pay growth slows Unemployment was 4.2% in the three months to the end of June, down from 4.4% over the previous quarter. Meanwhile, wage growth continued to slow, rising at an annual rate of 5.4% - the weakest for around two years, figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) suggested.
